to be quite honest this is probably my least favourite radiohead song because it's what puts me off listening to ok computer. i think it's a large part of the reason that ok computer is my least favourite album of theirs.
yes you read that right. there are lots of great songs on it, subterranean homesick alien, let down, karma police, climbing up the walls, lucky absolutely love all those but i find it hard to hear any emotion in the first two tracks at all, to me they just sound pretentious.
paranoid android i can forgive for this because it's intended to be a goof. but the opening track should grab you and make you keen to hear more but i just get bored of this and if i'm bored i'm slightly annoyed and no longer in the mood to listen to music so as a result i don't play the (lovely) rest of the album.
rant over.
chances are next time i play this i'll get it. oh well. |

the way i hear it, well at least the chorus, is that she is in a relationship which doesn't really seem worth it, and by saying 'give me a reason to love you' etc. she is demanding that the other person do something that justifies them being together. it's like she's pleasing him but he isn't bothering to give anything back.
also, this page does not need any more comments on how sexy the song is! i mean sure the music has a sort of sensual feel to it but i think some of you are exaggerating a little, i mean are strippers really the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear this beautiful music? |

it sounds more like the opposite to me, as if he might be begging for his life to end somehow.
as for 'floating up on the surface for the birds', if he drowns in a stream and floats to the surface of the water ducks or swans might peck at his dead body.
so this song could be about having suicidal thoughts. |

this is a great song, always find it soothing if i'm not in a good mood. as for the meaning i think aoieva and redpeanut make good points.
[it would appear most of you have only heard the romeo + juliet soundtrack version of this song. that's actually a remix; the original is a b-side from the street spirit single (also available on the 2cd reissue of the bends). there's not a huge difference, but the original is more raw with a longer ending.] |

"k, this song in my perspective, is about two children that are dating. When the media and clothes, jewelery, ect.. start to greatly infulence their lives the boy starts to fall into the geek catagory. The song is written at the time they start to drift or break up because of their social standing

With apple eyes " is like when hes trying to tell her lets go back and be like we use to be?"
That comment is close to what this means to me; the world seems to have an obsession with "media, clothes, jewellery etc."; I hate that and therefore I am a geek. It seems so unfair sometimes. I like to think that's what this song's about.
Plus the song has awesome drumming + solos. |

"In Billy Corgan's autobiography he describes his wedding day, writing that while the priest spoke he looked into his wife's eyes and thought she was a million miles away. He makes constant reference to her eyes in this song: "Dead eyes vacant as the sea." He didn't enjoy the wedding day and in the night when his wife had gone to bed he went out and looked up at the stars and thought he had made a mistake, hence "by starlight." Apparently it's 'based on a true story'; the man (Pistol Pete) murders the woman (Dusty) and thinks he has gotten rid of her but she comes back and haunts him, unaware that she is a ghost. After finding that out I can't tell you how many chills I got the next time I played it. |

the meaning makes a fair point, but i think this song is produced to the point where it sounds like what the title implies: a machine, rather than a band playing, which gives it a bland feel. |
