| Derek Webb – The Spirit Vs. The Kick Drum Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This was how I took it... "I don't want the Spirit; I want the kick drum" I don't really care about what is most appropriate at a given time, as long as we've got what people want. (I don't care about anything as long as the music is what I like.) "Like sex without love Like peace without the Dove Like a crime scene without the blood" More 'irony' of 'inappropriate' situations. "I don't want the Son; I want a jury of peers" I don't care what Jesus said I should do, I'll base my actions/life/choices on what the Church/others/etc. say I should/should not do or what they think is appropriate/inappropriate. "Like lies without the truth Like wine without the fruit Like a skydive without the chute" More about disregarding how it should be done and instead doing what looks best. "I don't want the Father; I want a vending machine" I don't want the Father to say yes or no, I want prayer/life/etc. to be like a vending machine. I put in my choices and then pay what I must to get it. "Like heaven without gates Like hell without flames Like life without pain" More on taking the easy way and getting what I want. Fantastic song. I like how DW makes [sharp] points with a dose of realistic cynicism. |

| Derek Webb – Heaven Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This seems as though it could reference the "heaven" that "Christianity Light" will get you. If you believe luke-warm then you just might end up with a luke-warm ending. "So paradise is a parking lot A spot up front is your reward And all the rest walk down streets of gold To the house they could afford" |
