I agree with the whole thing about this song being a father speaking to his daughter... but I don't think it's a divorce. I think the mother died. there's the line "The room was silent as we all tried so hard to remember, The way it feels to be alive, The day that he first met her." To me it's talking about being in the room after the funeral and trying to remember her life, and the father is remembering the day he first met her. And he sees his daughter crying, "her hair was pressed against her face, her eyes were red with anger"
he hates seeing this kill his daughter. everytime he looks at his daughter she reminds him of his dead wife... but he can't stand to think of her name because it hurts too much: "You make me think of someone wonderful, but I can't place her, I wake up every morning wishing one more time to face her"
he's so torn up over his wife's death that i think he either dies of a broken heart or kills himself. He's speaking to his daughter saying that he's sorry he had to leave her with all this pain to deal with and that he hopes that everything works out all right.

Am I the only one who sees a religious theme in this song? I mean "show me what it's like to be the last one standing, show me wrong from right.... and i'll leave this life behind... hurry i'm falling." early on in the song he says he's on his hands and knees. I think it's his prayer to God to send him a message that will save him and make him quit this lifestyle. |

I think this is literally about someone who is "not guilty" yet everyone is against them anyways. All those that were standing behind him have turned their backs on him; "You swore to never be bitter when the odds were favoring elsewhere." Also in the line: You swore to make amends orderly then turned and killed the acquitted"
He's been charged with third degree even though he's not guilty of the crime; "Your words, burned in my memory, Third degree and getting hotter each and every day."
He's telling them to not be ready to accuse others and "throw the first stone" unless you know the real truth. Don't be ready to accuse someone when we're all sinners anyways. |

He does consider himself a christian even though his music and theatrical presence have a lot to do with sex. He's spiritual but very sexual. sort of a double edged sword i guess haha. |
