alot of what made up the Palm Desert Scene, which Desert Rock , and subsiquently Stoner Rock, evolved from, was the effects of the Hippie movement further north in sanfrancisco, mixed with the heat of the desert. Because the desert is so remote, most of the early desert rock artists where able to get away with using psychedelic drugs in the middle of nowhere, like Weed, Mushrooms, LSD, and most commonly, Peyote. Odyssey is about a trip that Josh Homme and John Garcia took together during the first formation of kyuss. While in the deserts of California, the two got lost coming home from a Generator Party near the border of Nevada. their car broke down, so they had to hike to a nearby town. on the way, the two smoked some weed that Garcia had brought for the trip, but because of cottonmouth and the sun, they almost dehydrated. Thanks to Josh, they found a couple of Peyote cactuses near a limestone cave, about 5 miles from the town. they knew they had time to kill, so they ate the whole cactus, and had themselves one hell of a mescaline trip. Odyssey is both about the Peyote trip, and the hike the two went through. |
