"How cruel is the golden rule, when the lives we lived are only golden plated" The Golden Rule states that one has the right to justice, and has the right to ensure justice for others. Therefore, they're saying that justice is cruel and wrongful. As for the second part, their lives were golden plated because they must have been terrible beforehand, which gives them the need to 'golden plate' them. "And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me" Even though he knew fame would destroy him, he still went for it. "Though I carried karats for everyone to see" And he also knew it would destroy him, no matter how much talent he had to give or show. "And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies" I see this a little differently than most. I don't think it means God was crying at the reflection of his enemies, rather, he saw God as the reflection, crying. In other words, every one of his enemies (the people that are fame-induced) is a shame in the eyes of God. "And all the lovers with no time for me" By lovers, I'm guessing he means potential lovers, who had better things to do than to hook up with a fame-driven musician. (Let it be known, however, that I don't see FOB as fame-driven :P) "And all of the mothers raise their babies to stay away from me" I don't think this means literal babies, but more like the poeple around them. Since they don't like to associate with people like that, they don't want anyone else to either. "Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams" In other words, dangerous fantasies. If you think about those dreams too much, they could harm you. "When the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens" It's talking about the electric dreams again. He must've had an overly bad/good experience as a child, which saved him from having/following his 'electric dreams'. |

I really like this song, and how easy it is to play on the acoustic :) I also think this song is a little more intricate than it seems: "Honey is for bees, silly bear. Besides, there's jelly beans everywhere" Other than being an obvious "Winnie the Pooh" reference, it's also like saying 'Why get the milk, when you can get the cow for free. Kind of. "It's not what it seems in the land of dreams, don't worry your head just go to sleep" This one is my favorite line from this song. Since he's asking them to not worry and go to sleep, that means that the world as we know it is the land of dreams, and nothing's real. In other words, everything in this world is just a fake nightmare, and the 'real world' (i.e. the real dreamland) is much better. Confusing, I know. "It doesn't matter how you feel, life is just a Ferris wheel. Its always up and down, don't make a sound" And this would be my second favorite. It means that, whether you're happy or sad, you're still going to be on the same cycle as everyone else. But everyone knows that Ferris wheels don't go up and down, they go in a circle. So yeah, I understand the first part, but I have no idea why they contradict themselves in the second part. "When you wake up, the world will come around" This goes along with the first part. When they wake up from their sleep (from in the real world), the 'land of dreams' will be normal again. It might be hard to understand, but yeah. :) "It's just the sweet weather and the peacock feathers, (in) the morning it will all be better." First, I think it's 'In the morning', not 'And the Morning'. Now, good weather is a sign of good luck, and peacock feathers are a sign of prosperity. If you have both, in other words, that means that everything is good. They're promising the one sleeping that, even though their dreams are nice, soon the real world will be even better. |

This is an amazing Christmas song (the only tolerable one, in my opinion), and it brings back quite a few fond, bitter holiday memories...*sniffle* "These are your good years, don't take my advice, you never wanted the nice boys anyway" It seems that he's speaking from a father figure who's given up on his daughter (pretty much STRICTLY in this line). In other words, 'Even though I don't want you to, you're young, and you'll hang out with/date the bad kids no matter what I say'. "And I'm of good cheer, cause I've been checking my list" In the eyes of a greedy, bitter person, they're happy when they don't give/spend a lot on others. "The gifts you're receiving from me will be: one awkward silence and two hopes you cry yourself to sleep staying up waiting by the phone" First off, this is a discrete little play on words. Fall Out Boy is good with that :) It's speaking as if it's naming quantities of things on a list, as well as just naming them off (1- Awkward Silence, 2- Hopes). Also, he doesn't just not want her, but he wants her to want him and wait for him to call. "All I want this year's for you to dedicate your last breath to me before you bury yourself alive" In other words, 'If I could have one wish, it would be for you to die lonely, still wanting me'. "Don't come home for Christmas, you're the last thing I wanna see underneath the tree" He doesn't want her to surprise him with anything, he just wants her to go away. "Merry Christmas, I could care less" He's a scrooge :) "Happy New Years, baby, you owe me the best gift I will ever ask for" It's after Christmas, and she obviously came around anyways, because she didn't give him the gift that he wanted (which was for her to stay away). "Don't call me up when the snow comes down, it's the only thing I want this year" Another small 'play on words' about up and down, possibly describing their relationship. Maybe I got a little too analytical on some of those, but that's my opinion on it :) Merry Christmas! |

This is by far my favorite song by FOB (like my username?), and it's probably their most well-composed. "I just want to be better than your head's only medicine" He wants to outweigh (be better than) the drugs/alcohol they're taking (head's medicine) "A downward spiral just a pirouette, getting worse till there's nothing left" They're not only going down, but they're getting there fast (pirouetting downwards), and they won't stop until they hit rock bottom (nothing left) "What good comes of something when I'm just the ghost of nothing?" A double negative of sorts. Ghosts aren't really there, and so the ghost of nothing must really be practically invisible. In short, 'what good is trying to help if it's not going to do anything at all?' "I'm just the man on the balcony, singing 'nobody will ever remember me', rejoice and fall to your knees" The man on the balcony is a reference to Romeo and Juliet, i think. 'Nobody will ever remember me' is when the two don't think they're very important, and won't be missed. When Romeo and Juliet die (fall to your knees), they are finally happy (Rejoice). "For a lunatic of a god, or a god of a lunatic, oh, their faces are dancing till they can't stand it" I think this is a little more intricate. It's either a crazy dictator-type person with power or someone who can control someone with power. The people under their dictatorship have to feign happiness (their faces are dancing) under any and all circumstances (till they can't stand it). "Composer but never composed, singing the symphonies of the overdosed" Not necessarily a music composer, rather someone who creates something (not particularly anything), who has no idea how to create that something (never composed). Also, it's not necessarily drug overdosage either, and could be just the overuse of something. And the 'composer' is the spokesperson for these overusers. "Singing, 'I only want what I can't have'" In their case, composure, poise, and rationality (P!ATD reference, anyone?) "Heralded as a king before I had a birthday with double digits" I think, as far as the 'storyline' goes, the head of house (i.e. possibly the father) died when they were young, and they have to take over in the father's place. Not techinically a 'king', but the leader. "Fit the crown to my head but I was only a kid" They weren't ready to be the leader yet, and if they could, they would want the 'father' to be the king. |
