my interpretation of the first verse- "Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me as her body once did." -she was probably a young, "untouched" girl whom the man noticed and fell in love with. "All five horizons revolved around her soul As the earth to the sun" -all aspects of his life revolved around her, the center "Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn" -what happens when the air you depend on for life is no longer good for you to breathe "Ooh, and all I taught her was everything Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore" -he was her first, who taught her everything about love. so she trusted him and let him remove her clothing (figuratively speaking) which she wore to protect and guard her heart, leaving her totally vulnerable "And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything?" -the perfect blue sky of their love is now clouded, and he's bitter because he messed it up somehow "Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything" -the memories he has of them together are now permanently darkened and tainted. Love this song!! also near the end of the song, most other lyric sites say that the words are actually "i know you'll be a 'star' in somebody else's sky" which makes more sense, because to him she was the sun, the center of his life, but to her new lover shes only a star among countless others, nothing new or special. this song is so good. |
