i think this song is about not being able to get over past mistakes ("And I still walk the line held tight with my regrets"). He doesn't necessarily hate himself for it, but is more disappointed in himself. He no longer has any confidence and whenever he is confronted with a challenge or something to redeem his self esteem he avoids it and gives up so he doesn't get hurt by failure anymore.
