Jets to Brazil – King Medicine Lyrics 12 years ago
When I first heard this song I was relatively inexperienced with drugs and interpreted the lyrics as having a more abstract meaning. Coming back to the song several years later after gaining a more intimate understanding of drug use and addiction...having known, loved, and lived with many people struggling with a variety of different of substance abuse disorders the lyrics have become anything but abstract.

"Tell me how you do that crazy trick where you walk around asleep."

This could be interpreted semi-literally i.e. opioid addicts can often function in society; walking around, talking, even working, but a part of them is "asleep" or narcotized. Alternately this could be referring to a life lived in the anesthetic state induced by opioids or dissociative drugs, where the majority of a users experience begins to take place internally, they appear asleep but mentally they are "walking around" living life in a sort of dream world cut off from consensus realty. In both interpretations the behavior seems a feat to the sober onlooker, something worthy of asking, "Tell me how you do that crazy trick..."

"Save it for your doctor friend the one who keeps you under lock and key."

This could be interpreted literally as a doctor i.e. a doctor at a pain management clinic, a methadone clinic, or a similar sort of "sympathetic" doctor friend who fulfills the addicts needs and in doing so keeps them locked inside the cell of chemical dependence. Alternately this could be a figurative "doctor" in the sense that for drug users who self-medicate their dealer become their "doctor".

"You cut the heart out of your chest to let the light in through your arm."

The chest where the heart is located is generally considered the metaphorical seat of the "soul", here the user is cutting out their soul in order to let in light through their arm. The arm being the most common place IV drugs are administered, a metaphor used in many pieces of writing about addiction, e.g. The Man with the Golden Arm.

"Foul weather friend you are so dying an amateur chemist now."

This is one of the strongest lyrical moments in the song, an obvious play on the term "fair weather friend" meaning a friend who is only available when times are good. Drugs are the perfect "foul weather friend" because they are there for you when times are bad. Additionally drug users are the best foul weather friends because they tend to be downtrodden and socially uncomfortable and thus disinclined to judge other who are struggling through figurative "foul weather" in their lives. The amateur chemist line is particularly provocative, as drug users often have an unusually strong knowledge of pharmacology, chemistry, medicine, and human physiology as the knowledge has a variety of practical applications for the user.

Adam Green – Times Are Bad Lyrics 16 years ago
i have heard every song adam green has released solo and w/ the moldy peaches. i think he is truly an incredibly song writer - but of all the songs of ive heard this one is my favorite. its been the #1 most played song on my itunes for years running and i somehow think it will remain there for years to come. its obviously less ironic and complex than his other songs but its a masterpiece of concision, and when im really feeling bad it has always cheered me up. the progression of the lyrics is flawless in fact if you examine them closely you will see how much is packed in there - im not going to cornilly spell it out for you just look carefully and you'll see.

perhaps he will never return to these sort of terse, honest songs, i realize they are less "cool" but who knows - even if he does not - this song will always exist.

Buzzcocks – What Do I Get? Lyrics 16 years ago
also heard this song for the first time in ghost world, and the image of (the incredibly hot) throa birch shaking her hair to it makes me want to open up a firehose of jizz on her gorgeous face.

The Unicorns – Do the Knife Fight Lyrics 16 years ago
def some Solfège in this shit

joe gave me a tour of his house
do re mi fa sol la ti do

otherwise i would take a wild guess and say this song is about knife fighting, the best version is the live one where they break into the climax of "a quick one, while he's away" at the end.

long live the unicorns, anyone who has ruff gem mp3s should throw them online. in the only version i have the sound quality is ruff to say the least.
