I just think generally the song is about letting go, serenity and recognizing whatever the problem is it’s not worth it in the end. The very nature of life is that it’s fleeting and however strongly we may feel about anyone or anything that happens.. well on some level it’s already passed us by. Whether we look upon something fondly or with bitterness we aren’t going to be able to control it. I think one of the understated elements of Oasis’s greatness as a band is that many of their songs have deep positivity and a sort of timeless wisdom. I read or saw something about Noel writing this song loosely around a specific line taken from a tape he heard once of John Lennon talking in the Dakota in which he made some sort of “damned if we do damned if we don’t statement” and something along the lines of if we’re smart or clever they’ll find a way to fault us for that. Well I’m probably butchering that story a lot but I believe The line meant something to Noel and seemed to ignite that notion of letting go, living, doing and trying to separate oneself from the anticipation of how it will be understood or what the outcome will be. It’s a very tender piece to me and I just feel like it shows an extraordinary empathy for the human condition of caring. The fact that he could write those words as related to John Lennon seems as if he wrote it almost speaking to Lennon in a loving way and saying it’ll be ok. |

| I agree with a lot of the things that have already been said by people commenting on this song. I think its about a rejection of some sort, or perhaps not, there are things that he says that suggest it could be either way, for example he says "rooms are empty I've got plenty you can move in right away" that to me doesn't sound particularly like a relationship that has just ended. The other parts of the song sound to me simply like someone who is still in the very very early stage post break up, in which everything seems almost surreal, and you still almost have the drug of that person flowing through your veins, but everyday you need more to get by, and you have less and less of that person, to me thats what he means by "I can't stop coming down" (dreams, fading, chemical withdrawl, losing touch with a feeling you miss or need) I'm sure that drugs could be a possibilty, I'm not English so the elephant stone thing kind of escapes me. But it's strange when I hear this song It reminds me so much of that feeling when you still have the hope of someone, and you still have the thrill of them in your mind, almost as though they couldn't have broken up with you for real. Its one of my favorite songs though I love this band, I am only 23 so I think I kind of missed out on them when they were young, but I'm happy I heard about them later. One more thing, that line when he says "Your shrunken head lookin down on me above" I think I can kind of relate to that, seeing a girl almost looking down on you, still caring about you in someways, but clearly having moved on in others, so that she wants you to get through it, and be happy, but she's definitely not coming back, because she has decided you are not right for her, it has nothing to do with love, it just has to do with the choices people make and how both parties respond. The "hole in his dreams" is the fact that no matter how many times he goes over it, it doesn't ever make sense or get any easier. It just simply seems impossible. | |

I guess I feel like he is saying that he wishes he could be someone else so he could go up and start anew with whomever he is writing about (to have a fresh start for say.) I think that the part in which he says you won't do what the doctor ordered, you won't see someone else come on back to me, my bright tomorrow He could be talking about himself not being capable of moving on, or taking medication to repress feelings about somebody he loved and lost. or it could be him trying to convince whoever it is that they still love him and that their reluctance to see other people, or take medication is reason that they still care from him, and are afraid of dulling themselves with drugs, or trying to replace him with someone else. I truly believe the song is about loving someone else so much, and realizing all of the bullshit about healthy relationships, and coping methods that psychologists market for a profit, when in reality love is a very natural thing, bitter and sweet, cruel and kind, but by no means something anyone should ever deny. |

| I think that this song is about seeing someone you had a relationship with. Maybe someone who ended the relationship for their own reasons, and left your feelings out. It is about seeing that person all over the place by themselves, available to the whole world accept for you, and yet they are by themselves, they are not receiving attention from anybody else, and it is a torture to you because you know how much you love them, and just how you feel about them. Yet there is nothing you can do but watch them wait or slip away, until somebody comes along and takes them from your life forever. | |
