Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 16 years ago
on the surface, it's about coming to terms with a miscarriage by contemplating the possibility of an afterlife. the connective tissue is how similar life and death really are and that, as humans, we are equally as capable of creating life as we are of destroying it. the only way we can live with ourselves, knowing that, is to imagine there is a god somewhere.

just my reading. who knows what isaac was thinking when he wrote it. probably not anything specific, or there'd be no need to write the lyrics. lyrics can't be boiled down; they attempt to say something more complex than a single sentence.

Pavement – Summer Babe (Winter Version) Lyrics 16 years ago
the line is "my eyes stick to all the shiny robes / you wear on the protein delta strip / in an abandoned houseboat, i will wait there" robes matches up to the later mention of robes. houseboat is a pun on the protein delta strip. i always figured it was about condoms, there, the robes you wear on a protein delta strip (penis). as in, he's ruminating on the past, sees these condoms that "you" (as in, the general you, not someone specific", and making a joke about how he hangs out mentally in these bad areas waiting for something to happen, but nothing does, because he's only thinking.

the thing about malkmus' lyrics is, he's never saying anything directly. he's using imagery to illustrate a perspective, not to make a declaration. from my reading, he considers making declarations in a song a pretty meaningless and nihilistic practice, not to mention fruitless - any point will only be interpreted wildly differently than intended.

Pavement – Gangsters And Pranksters Lyrics 16 years ago
the merrry pranksters and the hells angels actually have a fairly intertwined history. maybe that's where he was headed. it's malkmus, though. his songs don't point directly to anything, really. they paint a portrait of a perspective.
