| Cat Stevens – Northern Wind Lyrics

This song is about someone who is scared of love. He calls this person "billy" because he thinks this person a fool. The wind means agression, a person don't want to give up so easily. Northern wind means coldness, a cold attitude, as opposed to southern. "And with this gun goes everything I want to say", gun for the sake of itself, agression for the sake of agression, meanin' the person is a psycho really. This song is psychoanalytical. |

It's just a song about love, what kind of other meaning is needed?? And the lines "heaven must have programmed you.." do make sense to me. Because sometimes you feel like you're doing something almost automatically and can't exactly understand why, whose program is that. the word "programmed" itself doesn't seem strange to me. in our time of computerization it's common, and anyway it has ancient Greek routes, don't forget. |

especially in this song words just don't matter. it's all about "i wanna be your man" and "you were meant for me". all the rest is hardly important, be it "ball like a hound" or hold out your hand or whatever.. If you care for words listen to some other of his songs, not just this one. |

dontcha know that Bolan used to change his lyrics easily? that was his way of expressing himself. one time it's robin hood, another - rock n'roll, then maybe something else. expressing emotion was the main thing and lyrics just go with the flow, the way he liked it to be at the moment. |

"You're an untamed youth, that's the truth, with your cloak full of eagles"
What is there to interpret? It's just a description. Untamed youth - someone wild, and that's the truth - 1) it rhymes with youth, 2) he often used this kind of phrase for persuasion (see "that's right" in City port, "I wouldn't lie" in Jupiter Liar"). "Cloak full of eagles" might mean a person who is really proud of itself and holds with dignity.
There's an error in the second last verse, it should be:
You got the blues
In your shoes and your stockings

I thought it was "all my hair will keep her smiling". He used to change and shift words so freely. His wondrous walk - the way he moved on the stage, and telephone dialling - some references to telephones existing in his songs (like Metal Guru, Shy boy).. |

Bolan's songs have a lot of inner meaning. It just depends on what kind of meaning you seek. This song is not about cars neither drugs - these are all superficial things. It's about love actually. About his dream of love... That he will be clean because you know - pollution machine, with time passing your mind gets a little dirty, that's how it works, this pollution machine which is life. But he hopes that he will be clean some day, that something good will happen and he'll be understood. That's the meaning, as simple as that. |
