Also here is my take on the meaning. Synopsis: Shane is talking to the listener the entire song. He is warning us to forget our hearts, forget how to feel, because he is losing his love and if anyone knows the pain of losing someone we love (talking about breakup not death), it is so intense sometimes the only way to survive is to become numb. The reason he has to break up with the girl is most likely because she cheated but the song isn't about vengeance or the reason for leaving so much as that we know that he still loves her but is forced to leave her now and it's about being heart broken by your loved one by some kind of betrayal. [VERSE 1] Fight these eyes, they're drawing you inside. -He's talking about the eyes of your love. They draw you to her and make you want her but as we find out later Shane (or whoever the guy in the song is) has to break it off with her). Signed my name in marker, -The relationship was serious, as in marker is permanent and his name is claiming the woman to be his girl. Watched the clouds as they got darker, -Getting darker is a metaphor for the relationship is breaking apart Felt it start to slip away. -confirms the previous line All the schemes were made and plotted, -The scheme was him breaking up with her. He starts relaying to us how he did it by saying it wasn't just as simple as "we're done" but he still loved her (as we find out) so it took serious plots and schemes to break it off. All the rules had been forgotten now. -The rules are his promises to her, all the times he said I love you and all the "rules" of love that you think of such as never leaving someone. Obviously to break things off he has to break all those rules. I made it by the skin of my teeth again this time. -The previous lines were in past tense because he already did it. He broke up with her and is saying he barely made it. Teeth don't have skin so I think this false statement is to imply how closely he survived. Almost as if teeth don't have skin so maybe he didn't really get by, he's obviously still suffering. [PRE-CHORUS] I'm waiting, still waiting to get away, and make a change, -He still hasn't gotten over her and is waiting to fully "get away" from her and his love for her in order to make a change and stop being heart broken. Seasons last forever in this maze. -The maze is the fact that he still loves her but had to break it off and can't be with her. He is confused by his great love for her but time drags on forever as he can't be with her. [CHORUS] Forget your heart. -Shane is giving us this as advice. Forget your heart means forget about your feelings, forget about love. Obviously if things are going good don't do that but he's saying when your in a position like his, all you can do is forget your heart, forget your love, or it will kill you. It's weighing you down inside as you confide your life to someone else. -Confirms that your heart is talking about love because love is confiding your life to someone else. Weighing you down is a bad thing so he's saying once your broken, you need to forget your love or you will be weighed down by it, which is completely true. Maybe we're scared to be alone, -Now Shane is answering the question of "Why does he love this girl if he had to leave her?". He's saying maybe we're scared of being alone, without someone. I don't think this is the only reason and thus he says maybe but it's definitely true that regardless of the girl, not having one anymore is completely different after dating someone. You just don't have that close relationship anymore. We're not prepared to throw the stones, And watch them drift out of our control. -I think the stones plural refer to the girlfriend, or maybe even memories of her. He knows that once he lets her go, and we know by now he has to, that she will drift off and no longer be his and that he won't have any part of her anymore. [VERSE 2] I braced my body for the sudden impact that was more than I, Ever thought that it would be. -Here Shane talks about when he actually broke up with her. He braced because he saw it coming but it hurt way more than he thought. And when it knocked me over, I've never felt more stiff and sober, Now I'm trying to get up and runaway. -Once again it shocked him more than he thought and now that it's done he's trying to run away from it before his love for her overwhelms him. [PRE-CHORUS] I'm wasting, I'm wasting my life away, I've gotta change, -He's wasting his life by sulking over her and he needs to change (same as last time) I've gotta burn the book and turn the page. -A strong indicator about the idea that he is getting over a lost love. It's time for him to move on (turn the page) and forget the memories of him and his girlfriend (burn the book). [CHORUS] [BRIDGE] There's no return to what you had when you started, Before you lost control, you will never recover. -Once again points to his girlfriend cheating in that now that she's broken his trust he can never return to what he had with her and will never recover from it. He's not talking to his girlfriend but still talking to us saying once YOU lose control of her it's over and YOU will never recover. Fight these eyes, they're drawing you inside. -Repeat of the first line warning us to stay away from our seductive ex. Lay down and pretend you're dead, lay down before you lose control, Lay down and pretend you're dead, lay down before you lose control. -I think he's telling us to pretend we are dead towards our love so that she doesn't keep coming after us and risking making us lose control. Basically if you show your girlfriend you still love her she'll trap you back with her and you'll "lose control". Pretend your dead (by forgetting your heart...) and show her you don't love her and she'll leave you alone so you can escape. [CHORUS] |

I second the corrections with an additional one. This: "Now I'm trying to get up and runaway." Should be: "Now I'm struggling to get up and run away." |

| Extremely important correction, in the chorus it should be "always" instead of "only". Makes more sense and you can clearly hear it in the acoustic version. Obviously we don't hurt "only" the one we love. Its just we always manage to hurt them too, and usually the worst. | |

| This song does not say that Soldiers aren't Heros. On the contrary, it tells us at they are, and more. When we think of a hero today, we think of someone big, strong, invincible, and who never gets hurt or threatened for any longer than it takes to defeat the villain. To often we think that Heroes have it easy in that it comes to them naturally. Sure they fire guns and kill people, but we think it's like in a video game were that's all that goes on. Instead, this song shows how soldiers do not fit the stereotypical Hero. They suffer, fall, make mistakes, and even if they win the war still come out sometimes feeling like they lost. A soldier is a Hero, not so much because he's fighting for the country, but because he's suffering for it. | |

| That's an interesting take but that last chorus is still talking about the American Flag. If you look at the parallelism between each chorus its a direct connection the previous statement of "I'll carry this flag", so when he says "I brought home that flag", "that" is referring to "this" being the American Flag. I suppose it's still possibly that it was wrote intending to be about the white flag, but you could take it either way. | |

Firstly I think some of these lyrics are wrong. "I will fight the loss" should be "I will find the lost" Also why do the 2nd and 3rd choruses change "leave and let YOU fall behind", it stays You the entire time, not him or them. As for the meaning, it's very confusing because at first glance the song seems to contradict itself, talking about following him and making it through alright, then talking about everyone being abandoned and "lying in the earth side by side", or dying. Really both of those are right. Anyways here is my really long but awesome and emotional interpretation of the song. I think it's about a soldier, his fellow troops, and the girl he left behind... "Screaming on the inside I am frail and withered" Basically he's in a fierce battle and he's sick, tired, and wounded. The reason the screams are on the inside is because soldiers still have to be tough on the outside and keep it together. "Cover up the wounds That I can't hide" A Paradox, if he can't hide the wounds, how does he cover them? But I think this has to do with hiding his pain and hurt to give himself, and the rest of his men, hope of getting in through it. He's lying to himself, telling himself that he's ok. "Walls that lie between us The saint within the sinner" Double meaning for both lines. Literally he's far away in a battle, the walls of space and time lie between them. Mentally he's a "sinner" and most likely she's the "saint". Also, as later in the song you find out, through the intense battle, the soldier has redeemed himself and though he's a sinner, through his honorable courage he has become a saint in the end. "I have lost the nerve But it's all right" Unsure about this. Probably back to the battle and he's losing it, but it's ok because no one has it together. "Carry the wounded and shut your eyes All will be forgiven None will rise" First you need to know that the battle has taken a turn for the worst. The soldier's troop has been ambushed and they are seriously outnumbered. Looking at the 2nd line, the soldier becomes a "saint" by acting valiantly and doing what the 1st line says. He helps his wounded comrades and loses his past sin. He tells them to shut their eyes though sort of like you would "not look down" or "don't look back". "None will rise" though because they are ambushed and will most likely all die. "Bury the fallen and lead the blind I will find the lost Dead inside" The 1st line here is not literal. The fallen are the men that have already died, "bury" simply means remember them and pay your respects, since their in a battle they can't actually bury them. The blind however are the ones perhaps still in shock or those who are wounded, he's once again being courageous and telling his men to lead them. Personally he says he "I will find the lost, dead inside" which are the ones that have given up hope and need to be rallied by a leader, the singer. "Into the nothing Faded and weary I won't leave and let you fall behind Live for the dying Heaven hear me I know we can make it out alive" Their ambushed and face bad odds, thus they are going "Into the NOTHING" having no idea what lies ahead of them. They are tired from the previous fighting but the singer says he won't let his men fall behind. He tells his men to live for those who died, he's rallying them and giving them a cause. He cries out to heaven for help, and tells his mean they can make it out, he gives them hope. "Leave me at the bottom I am lost forever" It sounds like the leader is giving up hope but I think he's saying he will "go down with the ship" and die so that the rest of his men can make it. "Letters from the dead Say goodbye" Once again giving his mean hope, the dead are saying goodbye to them because when they ambush started they thought they would meet the dead, but now the dead say by because they will live and not end up meeting them. "Sorrow falls upon us This will be the last time" Sorrow because they realize they will all die and no longer have hope. It's last time because soon they will be killed. "Days begin to end But I'll get by" The fight is near ending, he says he'll get by but he doesn't mean literally and physically, instead he means that their spirit will live as they will fight to the death, read on... "Follow the hopeless And shut your eyes" He knows they will die now so there's no more reason to give them false hope. He still tells them to shut there eyes though, instead of staring at death better to let it come quickly and quietly. "All will be abandoned None will shine" Once again, they will all die and be left alone. No one will shine because no one will live. Note that they haven't died yet, this is future tense. "Gather the broken and leave this life Lying in the earth Side by side" Not sure about gathering the broken but obviously he's saying that they will die but will go down together fighting to the end. CHORUS Same meaning, fight to the death and rally behind him. "I'll keep you inside Where I lead you cannot follow" Finally we get to his girl. He'll love her to the end and thus he'll "keep you inside". He knows he's going to die though so he tells her she can't follow him. "Straight into the light As my breath grows still and shallow" Into the light is where he's going, heaven. Self explanatory for the rest of it, as he dies he loses his breath. CHORUS "Stay with me You're all I have left I know we can make it out alive" Though he gave up hope previously and they all know they will die, this is perhaps their last act and so he tries to get them to go down fighting. Stay with me may also refer to his girl. Though she has no idea what's going on, since he's close to death, he's thinking of her and what she would be thinking of if she saw him sacrificing himself. He asks her to still love him even though he's going to die, he tells her she's all she has left. Then "we" refers to their love, since he's probably not really going to make it he knows that they can at least love eachother til the death. |
