So far this is my favorite off the album, close runners up, but I love the feel of it and the overall 'upbeat' attitude. I think many other of the songs are better written with some superb lyrics. As bawhite2 said, the piano gives it a bit of that Billy Joel feel, whom I also like. Anyway, I don't want to be a schmuck and just post some garbage and nothing about the meaning so here goes; First stanza; Makes some general references to 'footprints over the snow', giving the impression of more than one person and a physical remnant of their passing or being there. Then 'the fabric of all the lonely Covering only the fables and hands' is the attitude of people without a love or feeling of it, and how in the narrators mind it covers nothing but what is UN-true (fables) and his hands. Leaving the rest of himself exposed, in this case to the cold or 'holding the last of the season' which is obviously winter due to the snow. But the last line implies not regret for being open to the elements, or naked in his emotions, but an enjoyment of the feeling. Chorus; Self explanatory when you hear the kick drum, but this is what convinces me of the fact that he is not alone, as his girl is the reason for his heart pounding, and his love speaks for itself, ie, 'like a voice.' Second stanza; Confirms he is not alone as the opening line is 'We're walkin' in to the fields. We're walkin' in to the forest.' This carries over from stanza one as a continuation of their journey together. (Perhaps it uses the seasons as a time line for ones life, but I would imagine then that it would end in the winter and not begin there as is implied.) Then 'The moon is before us. Up above' is a classic reference to the moon as a symbol of the powerful forces of love and lust, such as in 'A midsummer nights dream' by Shakespeare, though that is a whole dissertation in itself. This is confirmed in the next line 'We're holdin' hands in the rain sayin' words like I love you, do you love me?' This again gives me the impression of being exposed, to the rain, or to love, but a very young and somewhat immature love. Third Stanza; Begins with 'Mother Mary heard us approaching her door although we didn't make a sound.' and this I found to be a little confusing. If anyone has an input to this please feel free to comment on it as I am only grasping at straws here. I GUESS it might mean the Virgin Mary, I think this due to the extreme change in the song to a much more somber and slower sound, out of reverence. But the door would be her heart, or the heart of love, as she ushered Jesus into the world and you could say her heart was close to the heart of god by that logic. And using this symbolism it would make sense to say that she could hear them close even though they were completely silent. (on an earlier note about the seasons representing the span of a life in the song, this might be the point where the two get married as most weddings are before god, or whatever religious nonsense. Point is you become one in the eyes of the lord and Mary represents an important link to god in our physical world by bringing his son into it.) Continues with 'There's nothing like finding gold within the rocks hard and cold, I'm so surprised to find more. Always surprised to find more.' This is reminiscent of a gold vein (hearts -> veins -> circulatory system) and the rock representing a person. All stranger's are usually referred to as 'cold' until you get to know them, or 'warm up' to them, and this might end in 'finding gold' within their heart. This s also my favorite line of the song, due to it's musical sound and quality though, not it's lyrical content. Last verse; 'I won't look back anymore, I left the people that do' is simply put, living in the moment. It's great to look back fondly upon your past, but living in it goes against the whole sentiment of the song. Be in the here and now and enjoy it for everything it's worth, wether it be walking in the cold with your loved one and enjoying it non the less or walking hand in hand on a rainy day. Don't look back with regrets for leaving those people in your life who do, just look forward to what is to come. One of my more favorite quotes is a Marilyn Monroe one 'We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets' which this reminds me of. 'Its not the chase that I love Its me following you.' is both self explanatory and beautiful, very poetic. Please ignore any glaring grammar mistakes or my lack of knowledge when it comes to music, I know nothing of it and have no musical talent whatsoever. |
