Midlake – The Jungler Lyrics 16 years ago
Whenever I hear this song I think of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I think "The Jungler" is the bosses of the factory workers that Upton references in his book. As the workers are struggling with despicable wages and conditions in these factories, more focused on the children in such factories..as there are references to age. "so when were older maybe sooner."
these lines strike me significantly with The Jungle..
"when we're older
we will thank the jungler
for all the gold that comes
out our pockets"
The song is all about the greed of the man "in charge" taking all of the profits for himself and then those affected theorizing about getting "him" back and giving him his just rewards for all of his petty greed. In the end it's all just ruse they play out for themselves in their heads because they couldn't actually pull any of it off as much as they hate everything that the amoral man in charge has forced upon them. If it wasn't for 'The Jungler' they may have become corrupt themselves.

it's just a theory. :]
but I definitely agree with DenverBound that it has to do with Upton Sinclair's book.
