I keep wondering if Candy isn't the same Candy mentioned in the lyrics of "Dear John". I always interpreted her as John's mistress, which would make sense in the context of this song, if he really did love his wife. |

I agree with evergettheurge--this definitely seems to be about young/first love. That all-consuming feeling at the beginning, and thinking it'll last forever...then the inevitable end of it. At the end of the song, he's looking back and reminiscing ("a breathing time machine").

One of my favorite song lyrics ever. My take on it is that they're talking about how people refer to sex as "making love". I have always refused to say "making love", always arguing that you aren't MAKING anything...love is either there or it isn't. It isn't being created. I like to think that he is realizing the same thing. But that could just be my own views coloring my interpretation ;-) |
