Even after 10 or so years, the opening to this song still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I've always thought that it alludes to religion or more specifically finding it/losing it. It also seems wrapped up in old style America - thinking of it as an idyll but finding it wanting. |

I sort of remember hearing this around the time (or just after) that I was breaking up with my first 'love' and it became a soundtrack for that moment. Just the futility of it all, the plans, hopes and dreams that you'd planned to share with someone and then bam, not going to happen. |

I stumbled across this song on spotify and it took me back to when I first heard, around the time it came out. The opening of the song still gives me goosebumps, probably 15 years after it was first released. Voodoodolly has it pretty much spot on in terms of the meaning of the song. Meeting up with the girl who took his virginity (and he hers) and still wanting her although she is with someone else. However, there is a little more to it as there is some relation to growing up or maturing. There is some sarcasm as he mentions how they've grown, yet, I always had the impression that he hasn't really 'grown up' and he believes she is faking it. The pretence being an adult, simply because you're in an adult relationship. Probably not explained what I mean all that well but I guess there is the blatant story and then the deeper meanings. |

As others have said, whilst it is about vampires there is also a subtle hidden meaning in there. I guess you can take it a few ways, depending on what you want to read into it. Taking the point of view of relationships, it seems that it's about negative parts of personality. The ones that you tend to keep hidden until you are really comfortable with one another. It's that first realisation that the person you're with may not be perfect and has flaws. Whether a habit, personality trait, addition, deformity or whatever. I get the impression that the 'fangs inside someone' line is not so much about him biting someone but the fangs is actually his 'foible'; hidden within his 'every day' persona. He's saying, "I' ashamed as I don't want you to see me doing this/acting this way and I understand if you want out". However, he's also saying that he's fine with whatever their secrets are although there is a worry that when they come/are added together they'll become destructive. Pretty much what _aeronautical said then! |
