| The Cascades – Rhythm Of The Rain Lyrics | 16 years ago |

In the first verse we’re introduced to a whining, depressed and delusional wuss that thinks that the rain is scolding him. His deluded thinking leads him to conclude that he’d rather listen to his own sopping tears than the drops of the falling rain. Obviously a self-absorbed individual in need of therapy. 2nd Verse. O.K.- so let’s see, all we have to go on is that some girl left town looking for a brand new start and the guy who’s pining for her seems to have had a mysterious and distant relationship with her, so much so, that she knew very little of his feelings for her. At this point, it’s up for speculation why she took off. I’m guessing the chick either got dumped by some guy who left her with an unwanted pregnancy, forcing her to go elsewhere to abort; or even put the kid up for adoption. 3RD Verse. The girl hardly knew him and now she’s guilty of dumping him. The singer goes on the attack when he claims she “don’t care”. Now the whining schlep is seeking pity and calling her a thief of his heart implying she worked at getting him to fall in love with her when as of yet, no evidence has been presented that they knew each other in any intimate way. He’s beginning to sound like a stalker at this point. Maybe that’s why she skipped town. 4th Verse. Now he’s begging the rain for help after telling it to scram at the start of the song for being frank in its assessment of the singer’s obsession. His foolish behavior is now becoming possibly psychotic, evidence by his conversing with the rain and growing frustration at the girl leaving him. His madness has him wanting the rain to chat it up with the sun, convince her to love him, even now suggesting that THEY both shared a previous love for each other. Classic stalker, he’s gone from loner whose love was never known by the object of his obsession to thinking that they once were in love with each other. I’m guessing now that the girl did beat it to get away from this sick puppy. Restraining orders were probably rare back then. So, in a nutshell- the song is about a psycho stalker railing against the rain about the girl who escaped his clutches. |
