I get chills from the opening bars of this song till the very end. To me, it's about a guy who's trying on different hats. Inside, he's all these different people and he's just trying to find his true self. This is the song that left me hopelessly in love with The Decemberists. It's perfect in every way. |

To me, this song seems like its from the perspective of a male. I think it's sort of an unrequited love situation. The narrator is leaving town and has finally gotten up the courage to tell this girl he loves her and that she deserves better than her current abusive relationship. And Carolina stands for the location and for a girls name.
