I really like what you said! I think the quoted parts you said expresses this song really well. It's just so hopeful. :)

I agree with you. I think this is evident especially in the "you're headed home" line. I don't know if the whole song is about Heaven, but I certainly think that it has a religious feel to it. You obviously don't have to interpret it religiously, but I tend to because I believe in God. It's just so hopeful, and reminds me that God's always there. Part of me also would venture to say that when Adams says "wake up" he means when that person finds God. But waking up in Heaven works too. However you interpret it, it's definitely an extremely hopeful and beautiful song.

Sky Sailing – Blue And Red Lyrics 13 years ago
I think what AdamYoungAddict said is completely possible. I've heard that one of Adam's girlfriends died in car crash or something like that. Perhaps this song was written for her. It would make sense in that he would still miss her and she would be gone, kind of what AdamYoungAddict said. This interpretation could also incorporate the title "Blue and Red" because ambulance lights are blue and red; if she indeed died in some sort of car crash this imagery would apply. However, I am not sure how reliable my sources are on the girlfriend dying thing. It could be off base.

Jars of Clay – Don't Stop Lyrics 14 years ago
I like what pr1nc355 and kasper2184 said. Does anyone know what is meant by the line "don't stop for me now?" If it is a love song from God, why wouldn't He want us to stop running from Him? Do you think it's just one of those things where He wants us to have free will in every situation? Or something more? Just curious. Any opninions are welcome. :)

Jars of Clay – Headphones Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with pr1nc355, who replied under martincr70's comment. It is definitely warning the listener about getting too caught up in their own lives and not listening to others. I think Jars of Clay is saying that sometimes people try to block out negativity with a positive outlook that causes them to miss the seriousness of the problem ("We watch television, but the sound is something else
Just a song played against the drama, so the hurt is never felt"). I think that it also talks about the effect this has on the other person who has a problem. When others kinda overlook others' problems because they don't want to deal with the pain or because they are too caught up in themselves the other person gets the feeling that they don't want to hear about their problems at all. And this feeling of neglection just makes them feel worse, and also causes a major communication problem in the relationship.

When you listen to the song the way it sounds is also telling of the meaning. The song is almost numbing-sounding, partially caused by the repeated line "headphones on...headphones on..." It just sorta is always there in the background, just as our own "headphones" are playing, blocking out real compassion and feeling towards others. The song makes you feel almost numb, just like people feel numb towards others' problems.

Oh, and if you think I'm totally wrong that's completely fine with me. I could very well be way off-base. Just thought I'd share my opinion on the song. I think it's brilliant, lyrically and musically. Really, the whole album is to be honest. One of the best ones I've ever boughten for sure (along with my Owl City albums).

Jars of Clay – Closer Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with you except on the last part. I've always taken this be God talking to His people. I think sometimes, at least for me anyways, we can distance ourselves from God because we don't think He really wants to know about our problems (tangled kite strings). I think this is Him saying that "no, I want to help you and know you and be closer to you." That last line does seem to imply a person to God though. I don't know exactly what it means, I could be completely off base. Just thought I'd share. :)

Jars of Clay – Closer Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it could be about either a human relationship or a God relationship. Or perhaps even just a friendship, however, the last line "I'll miss the shivers in my spine every time that we touch" doesn't really go with that last one. I think it's just about connecting with someone else completely, including all your crap, all your frustrations and flaws, and working through it ("I want your kite strings tangled in my trees all wrapped up"). This can be applied to a human relationship. It is also applicable to God, for I'm sure He wants us to be close to Him and close enough so He can work through our crap with us as well. As for a friend, I think that you can have love for a brother or sister in Christ, or just any friend at all, and want to help them out. But you can only help them if they're willing to share their troubles. However, this last interpretation is stretching it, especially because of the last line (as mentioned above). Anyway, however you take it, the song is brilliant. Sorry this got kind of long, I'm awful at writing concisely! I know there weren't any solid facts about the band's opninion on the song itself, but hopefully this was helpful anyway. :)

Thanks for posting those verses! It's nice to have a Biblical reference to go with the song. :)

Personally, I agree with clearbrook516 in that the lyric "I am not my own / For I have been made new" is referring to God. It just doesn't seem that a relationship with a person could make you say something as dramatic as "I have been made new." It seems that only God can truly renew your life. However, if this song doesn't connect with you in that way, don't worry too much about it. It's a beautiful song either way. :)

Wow, I never thought of this song like that! Thanks for the interpretation. I really like what you said about the ambulance lights. Just the other day I was wondering what Adam meant by the red and blue lights. It's a really interesting perspective, thanks for your opninion! :)

Locknessie, you could be totally right. I think Adam Young likes daydreaming about other places, espeically costal places. He's from Minnesota and obviously doesn't get to see much scenery there (I can relate, I'm from Iowa and there's not much here but hills and corn). Whatever it means, it's fantastical! And this is one of my first comments too. :)

Personally, when I listen to this song I think of God when I hear the lyrics posted above. Something about "take me above your light" makes me think of Him. It what really makes the song for me. But I could be wrong, and if you don't like this interpretation don't worry about it. If you like it more when you think of it in relation to a girl than awesome for you. :)

Owl City – The Technicolor Phase Lyrics 14 years ago
To me this song makes me think about how God can be anywhere, and that He's always with you in spirit. It could definitely be about a girl; however, I do know that Adam Young (Owl City) is Christian, and the line "if you cut me I suppose I would bleed, the colors of the evening stars" makes me think about God up in the sky. Plus, the line "I am the black in the book, the letters on the pages that you memorize" makes me think about how God is present in the Bible. This is just the way I look at it though; it's what really connects with me. If it does with you too, then awesome. And if it doesn't, awesome all the same. I believe you try to enjoy the music the most you can. So totally disregard this if it doesn't make the song more enjoyable to you. Just my opninion. :)

I think that chadek is completely right. I know it is a reference to Star Trek (which I definitely appreciated), but why can't it have a deeper meaning as well? I think it can be both; however, think of the song in whatever way you like it best. You should always enjoy the music. :)
