I think this song reminds me of Your Ex-Lover is Dead. Only it shows more of the female perspective. Well for me i see the first stanza this way. "if I am lost for a day try to find me, but if i don't come back then i won't look behind me." (The first 4 lines she is probably quoting herself of the past. It highlights her strength to be able leave a place or person without regrets) "all of the things i thought were so easy just got harder and harder each day" (and now she starts to regret her current situation. so we can probably infer that she has left someone. Well this sounds kinda far fetched but theres more.) the second stanza "december is darkest, and june is the light. but this empty bedroom won't make anything right." Well i think the first 2 lines refers to the changing seasons, how time passes. The 3rd line is important. It hints that there was probably someone she was close with probably used to sleep with in her bedroom. But now that hes gone, everything seems bleak. "and out on the landing a friend i forgot to send home who waits up for me all through the night." This is sorta proof. "A friend i forgot to send home" hints that she left him and yet he still yearns for her or wishes her well. and immediately after this stanza the male lead starts singing "calendar girl, who's in love with the world, stay alive" it is as if he is the male protagonist. He has yet seen her, they have probably lost contact, so the most he can do is pray for her well-being. More than that, "stay alive" is rather poignant. It hit me that "stay alive" might actually be a reference to, Your Ex-Lover Is Dead, where theres this line "Live through this and you won't look back". He probably knows that although she left him, she would still be hurting inside. This interpretation is fortified by the closing chorus where both male and female vocal sings as compared to the first and second chorus where only the male lead sings. "i dreamed i was dying as i so often do; and when i awoke i was sure it was true. i ran to the window threw my head to the sky, and said whoever is up there, please don't let me die" this stanza illustrates her melancholy and her hope for "living through this" phase of her life. "I can't live forever. i can't always be." one day i'll be sand on the beach by the sea; the pages keep turning, i'll mark off each day with a cross and i'll laugh about all that we've lost. This stanza show that she is aware that her current feeling, although impactful and long-lasting was not immune to time. It would disintegrate with time just like she would upon death. "We've lost" fortifies this general theory that she is not alone in her suffering at that this song involves a second persona. "January Febuary March April May, I'm alive June July August September October, I'm alive November December, yeah all through the winter I'm alive, i'm alive" the closing chorus is most important. Unlike the first 2 choruses, the closing chorus is sung by both male and female persona proving that they are relating their personal experiences, how through the year they have survived the tough period. In contrast, the first and second chorus are only his wish for her well being and her ability to get over the tough period. In addition, the musical accompaniment gets more cheery, it kinda felt like the ending of 500 days of summer where they Tom was moving on in his life, going for the job interview and all. This is my humble opinion of this very well-crafted song. My absolute favourite. |
