Wow! I think you nailed it right on the head...Your interpretation made me actually think about "my own" translation of the lyrics for the very first time (I actually learned of this song not through "twilight" but from watching my fellow dancers on So You Think You Can Dance (Ps...for those of you who truly love this song I highly suggest you look up the dancer's performance on youtube...its a beautifully breathtaking rendition! And the choreographer admitted that "Twilight" was her inspiration!)) Anyways...I tend to digress. ;) What I meant to say is that I do agree the song was written with no regards to the twilight series whatsoever. Moreover, I will say that I am definitely siding with "drug interpretation" argument! ;) Makes complete and utter sense to me in every aspect!....including: "stolen power" = a sense of security not owned but "borrowed" (often seen in those who "overcompensate" in an attempt to hide their real weaknesses, as well as those in possession of "energy" that is undeniably unnatural- aka. energy gained through substance abuse.) And! I find this "choice of carefully selected words" even more compelling: "YOUR spine is ablaze" "felling any foe with MY gaze" To me, "Your spine is ablaze" is yet again a reference to the effects that drugs have on the nervous system....superhuman strength, power, etc. Then in an ever so eloquently beautiful yet subtle "reveal" she continues with "felling any foe with MY gaze"..."MY gaze"....wow! To me that is more than telling of the true nature of this song. (The drug itself is responsible for the heightened "senses" and doesn't shy away from taking credit for it.."Yes you feel this incredible sense of power and inner strength, and every foe felled is done at the hand of the illusion I create!) |

First I'd like to say that I think the ambiguous nature of song writing alone is perhaps what I find most intriguing and beautiful about music in general. And I do LOVE that lyrics mean different things to different people and agree that no interpretation can be deemed "incorrect"... With that said...(ahhh! Don't hate! ha ;)!!) this song (at least from the standpoint in which it was originally written) was the emotional portrayal of a life imprisoned by denial...A "burden" with a "weight" so profound and complex, it can only be understood by those who have kept a secret so deep and so dark, that they were somehow able to *keep* it from themselves. This song is in reference to those struggling with bulimia. (This "concept was mentioned in a previous post, but I felt the need to confirm the "truth in it") And for "breath me"... (This stems from the moment "after" which is encompassed with an overwhelming feeling of guilt, disappointment, and disapproval. There is a sense of "you know better so why did you?" which is met with an equally upsetting, yet contradicting rush of helpless "but I'm sick and couldn't help it"...The latter emotion turning quickly to resolve, then to determination to do things differently, then back to denial. "ALL of these thoughts, emotions, convictions" run their course in a matter of mere seconds...the moment the "beast" feels content and loosens its grasp- the moment you come up grasping for air and realize you almost let yourself drown- the moment you fear you fear your heart may burst its beating so fast and all you can do is tell yourself to "breath...") Ok...so the last little tangent was an "interpretation" of what exactly was meant by "breath me"...but the premise of the song is not an interpretation. |
