| The Cardigans – Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds) Lyrics

"cutting diamonds with a rubbery knife" obviously refers to an exercise in futility. The author is telling the subject of the song to stop trying to destroy all of the beauty in the world since it is pointless to even try. She says as much when she follows up with "The world is full of diamonds, go out and find them". There is beauty all around if you just stop trying to blame and destroy long enough to notice. |

The song is about his relationship with his girlfriend that was going bad. In the beginning he questions whether he wants to go on with the relationship "Is this the place that I wanna be, is it you I wanna see?" He feels like he is being painted as the bad guy, the one causing the relationship to fail "You're leaving me with a hated identity". But he has not give up yet "I keep on coming here and standing in this state". The next line "But I'm never really sure if you'll take what I'm saying the right way", is self explanatory. Anyone who's been in a bad relationship can identify with that sentiment. They have probelms communicating so talk around issues "..verbal pocket play.." He does not identify with his new found success (perhaps she wanted the success and he didn't) symbolized by the cadillac he bought but doesn't drive (The Cadillac that's sittin' in the back. It isn't me, no, no, no). He just wants to be his old self, before the success (I'm more at home in my Galaxie) |

A couple of the lyrics are wrong (the lyrics are included with the album):
"And they try to find a hole they can't outgrow" should be "In vain trying to find a hole they can't outgrow" and "Wine finely on the vine" should be "wind finely on the vine". Finally, "Oceanside swells" should be "oceanside SWALES"

| Bright Eyes – Coat Check Dream Song Lyrics

I think the urge to make his lyrics literal is understandable, but for the most part he deals in images and metaphors. I think the song does an excellent job of portraying a dreamlike sense of disconnectedness and chaos. Much like in a dream there are snippets from his personal life ("I slept with that dealer all summer", "In my styrofoam coffin, asleep on the interstate"), musings on spirituality or a lack thereof ("Stuck on a ladder to heaven, on trial way back in The Hague", "one brick on top of another, such is the measure of man"), thoughts about politics ("on a great silver beltway, democracy's shackled hand"), and host of other images. While I'm sure each lyric has meaning to him, I am not sure that he edits his writing enough to put together any kind of coherenet narrative. |
