I think all of the songs on Slanted and Enchanted have meanings. The album definitely has Pavement's most abstract lyrics, but I think it is really important to listen to the mood of the music and singing to interpret them. To me this song sounds like someone with personal issues who is unable to change for someone else, probably a love interest. The opener, Lies and betrayals / Fruit-covered nails / Electricity and lust / Won't break the door, is about how nothing phases protagonist. The burden is implied with the heavy coat stanza. The "Ex-magician" and "tigger cut" stanzas are the protagonist describing himsself and his burden again. My favorite is the sha-la-la-la-la part of the song. It's like saying, "yeah I'm damaged, so what?" The "I've learned the truth" and "spit it out" stanzas are the protagonist explaining to his love interest that he cannot change for them, and that it will not work out. |

The first stanza describes the scene at a handcuff party, where you and the opposite sex get chained together and have to drink some said amount of alcohol before being released. It's a race. The protagonist has fallen for thier partner, but is upset about the pretenses under which it has happened. Sounds like there was a fight involved (shaking of teeth). The refrain is about how the protagonist is disgusted with having to live a life where one has to change thier personallity at night to fit in, socialize and find relationships This is my take on the whole thing, and yes he does say more after "girls saying", maybe folly first. |
