if your gonna talk about the maturity, then im gonna say BULL: the way these guys fuck up conventional rhythm in this song suggests something way more mature then two kids skipping in the flowers. The dark cello sounds more or less evil, and that bass percussion cancells out any chilish innocence those xylophones might conjure. maybe that works with your next point, that its about the lose of innocence? |

could the star spangled tennis shoes represent a shallow and plastic version of national pride? Like hey, i wear my flag on my shoes, everyone accept me and high five america with me! from n australian point of view, it does seem there is a little bit of a scary faux nationalism in america, with everybody scared of suggesting anything other then pure genuine love... |

i find your assumptions and forced friendly nature disagreeable. Maybe keep your lets hold hands and win life together rants on the DL.
I mean seriously, i came to this page wondering what the fuck Berninger was even saying at the end (i was singing something like "my voice is staying in my so so so so", which made no sense) and discovered a multitude of colour references which i would have otherwise never understood; Australian teenagers lack some of the context needed to get American political symbols, and the logos of freaking insurance companies. So you know what? I learnt something. i read through the comments and i learnt something. All i had to do was scroll down a little and read, and its all right there. So don't criticize a system which works perfectly dandy already; if i can come here and muster up some meaty conclusions which would have been several leagues beyond me initially, then so can you. |

HA i just bothered listening to those few words in the song for the first time, and i couldn't really believe it! Grizzly bear? being funny?! oh man, this is fantastic.
Sure you could suggest that this song shows an intimate sonic journey exploring a relationship, OR you could pray that they are nothing like that wanky and decided to write something funny for once. I can see two old people having that argument, which they probably have every night, ending with that ".....fine" (happy sustained major chord, with the band maybe nodding and smiling to each other. "we did good today guys, we did good," says the drummer. "oh, i don't know if we were wanky enough with these lyrics." then they all laugh. good times, good times) |

haha, especially in context with the rest of the album. dosn't this one come after pretty much every horrible thing that could possibly happen happened to E? Well the rest of the album sounds miserable anyway (in a good way) |

i was using this as a aural study on how simple music can be incredibly effective....and was horrified to discover it is actually rather complex and dense. there is something like 5 drum layers or variations that alternate through the song, variations on the bass riff, plenty of sound effects (like that chirpy PING! that happens every now and then) and then the layered strings...Its deceptive, but that is so much of the charm. Super simple song that has actually been produced an incredible amount, in the most awesome subtle ways. |

don't look at me....BUS STOP BOXER!
i'ts not great lyrics, but being the first thing i think of when mentally seatching for E's lyrics, its not fantastic. Hey, why am i arguiing against you, he is almost always fucking fantastic! |

To me this song is about feeling guilty about sexual exploits. There are sevral references to filling your beds, and being Lonley (such as the title! Whoa!) on a superficial sense. "restless hands" "wretched hearts" have sexual implications, of using others. The second half of the song maybe ponders on the guilt of these actions, and on the inability to move on change your ways...
Such an amazing song from an amazing band. The moment near the end where one of the singers is screaming along side those massive guitar sounds....my oh my... |

goddess has strong implications that are gender specific. Though it could also be a spiritual thing, and we use female words for ships and guns and etc. But i'm going to go ahead and assume its a girl, and so will i guess most people. Obsession is defiently there though! |

rattleandhumu, calm the duck down. first of all he admits this is an opinion that is intangible and not confident ("Okay, maybe I'm just seeing this because I want to"), second of all, wasn't a National song used in the Obama campaign? I'm australian and i know that, so obviously it's not uncommon knowledge. and thirdly this is a site called SONG MEANINGS. you get songs. you discuss meanings. If politics is maybe relevant to the meanings, then they can be there. In regards to the national, it is relevant. If personal interpretation is also relevant (see Matt Berninger quote, "I don't know what that song means...but it sounds Canadian") then it may as well be there as well. I feel like i'm your mum reminding you to play nice. so, you hyped up child you, play nice! |

Just listening to the song i assumed it was about a family in which the daughter had died, with the brother lying his ear to the ground to hear her "sleeptalking," and the father just rocks of to the mountains because of the whole divorce thing, and the grandfather just wants to die. Now, with the words right in front of me i'm just confused. Why does everything have to be so gosh darn ambiguous! |
