I listened to David Gray's version and while it wasn't bad, it's got nothing on the original. His version sounds very ordinary to me and any sense of character or emotion it may have is covered up by that strange voice he ususally sings with. I'm not sure why he had to change the lyric "sleeparound" to "runaround" either... To me, Marc Almond's voice has far more character and emotion, because he sings with a more conversational voice, like someone talking to you, rather than David Gray's voice, which is more "I'm a stereotypically-sounding emotional musician, man." Subtle, conversational voices are common feature of synth-pop and one of the reasons us synthpop fans love it! Another common feature of synthpop (which isn't necessarily always done on purpose) is putting upbeat dance-like rhythms in sad songs to create a contrast. Even The Smiths, who are not synthpop, did that! This technique is used to good effect in this song, it's certainly not "obnoxious." Life is bittersweet and it reflects that fact. I also think the upbeat rhythm better embodies the anger that the narrator's feeling. |

| Erm, you seem to have completely missed the point. The "we should be together" part has nothing to do with homophobia, it's just a crafty reference to the song Stan to let the listener know the rap star in the song is Eminem. The part that mentions homophobia is about the general controversy of people accusing Eminem of having homophobic lyrics. If you'd actually bothered to find out about this song properly, you'd know that Neil Tennant has stated numerous times that he actually thinks Eminem is a good artist and believes Eminem's defence that in his "homophobic" lyrics, he is only playing characters who represent the ugliness of America.
