The lyrics were never intended to be narrative to the story but rather match some of the themes of the story: Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard told MTV, "The song at its core is just about meeting another halfway, because life is very short, because there's only a brief period of time to really connect with people, and that it's important to recognize that. If anything I find the lyric and overall theme of the song relates more to Jacob's perspective as he wishes Bella would 'meet him half way' rather than wasting her time wondering about Edward in his absence, and that Jacob is willing to take Bella at her best or worst. The repeated lyrics "everything ends" refers to what Gibbard stated in the above quote, which is that time does eventually run out and you cannot take people or opporotunities to connect w/ people for granted because that opportunity will eventually end. |
