Just thinking about this and using the video as the model for the song, I noticed that the beginning of the song is where she seems to be at rock bottom. She sings about how she's struggling to get by, and that she is waiting for someone at the "Gate." Death has no age, so she's this more grown woman waiting for something. As the verses progress in the lyrics, she seems to get younger and younger. The beginning she is struggling, whereas in the end she's singing about what she thought as a child. To sum it up, at the end, she recaps what she sang about. In the video, it started off as a good thing and rather young and premature; however, as the night progressed, life got more violent and a car crash followed. The man was still standing, holding the young lady; however, this is also the point where the song and the video merge to have the same feel. The beginning of the song was tragic and bloody, and the beginning of the video was happy and immature. It's kind of like those reverse movies? That's how I see it. |

Personally, I thought of it as suicide. The first stanza about someone who love another and is happy, but their relationship is tainted or something of the sort. Hence, the "black water". He then thinks that suicide, or disappearing under the waves, will bring him to peace, hence the "white water". The last one is where he sees that paradise isn't worth it. So, in the last two lines he changes his mind and sees that he is continuing with life and that's Happy Day. |
