I completely agree with Golda, but I'd like to expand on the theme of misogyny by analyzing several lines in that context. "They got angelic tendencies Like some boys tend to act like queens" This seems to refer to Frye's theory that misogyny stems from homoeroticism. "Oh if every angel's terrible Then why do you watch her sleep You love to hear her sing And wear purple eyes like rings" Like Golda said, many men who hate women desire them sexually. In this case, these men love to have sex with women and physically abuse them. "Sing" is a slang term for moaning during sex; and "Wear purple eyes like rings" is a reference to physical abuse. "Well the flowers have no scent And the child's been miscarried" "Flower" is a slang term for vagina. When a woman is sexually aroused, the vagina produces lubrication which causes the "scent". Here, women may be having sex but are not aroused, therefore have no scent. And the physical abuse from men referred to in the previous line may have caused a miscarriage. "Oh every angel's terrible Said freud and rilke all the same Rimbaud never paid them no mind But jimmi morrison had his elevators His elevators He had his elevator angels " Freud described women as inferior to men; Rilke was the first to use the term "terrible angel" to describe not a biblical angel, but a "being who stands for the recognition in the invisible of a higher degree of reality." Rimbaud was a homosexual and Jim Morrison famously had sexual encounters with women in elevators. "If every angel's terrible Why do you hide inside her Like a child in a skirt The supermarket's loud and bright And boy don't she feel warm tonight" This is probably the most poignant point, because it highlights the hypocrisy of misogyny in patriarchal society. "Hide inside her" and "Boy don't she feel warm tonight" are both references to sex. If women are really terrible, why do men seek the warmth that a woman can provide sexually? Men who hate women, love dominating them sexually because they want them to take submissive roles in order to support their dominant role. Metaphorically, this concept could be applied to patriarchal society. |

Does anybody think that this cover could be a commentary on the sexual portrayal of women in hip hop? "And if you think You're gonna get away from me You better change your mind 'Cause you're coming home You're coming home with me tonight" This part seems especially sexually aggressive. Just a thought, because their songs all seem to follow similar themes. |
