Jewel – Little Sister Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is a clear critique of modern capitalist society and the social problems that it creates. It does not matter if jewel did not realise that what she is critiquing is caused by capitalism or not, because the song is from the perspective of the soul rather than economics. The immense social inequality in capitalist society causes social problems like drug addiction. Pharmaceutical companies profit off pushing drugs onto people. Little sisters look to exploitative relationships for false security. Our entire country claims to be a Christian nation and yet we express ourselves by going to the mall and purchasing clothing -- she is saying that this consumer culture is souless and brings us further from God. People in rural conservative America "starve" on white bread and beer, while they forget the basic elements of their culture that make them so close, the "handshake or hug. What is this capitalism of the big banks and their corportate servants and the consumer slaves that give them their wealth willingly (not to mention the exploited labor of people in other countries). This is not Christianlike, and this is not the same as the local deli, bakery, or tool shop. These problems were wrecking the collective soul of this country in the 90s, and today this message is more clear and present, more painful than ever because we are now realizing it.
