There are so many ways to interpret this song. I'm going to pick two: Roger Water's intent and my own subjective interpretation. Many English professors, not all but a lot, usually side with the author's purpose, especially when it comes to William Shakespeare. But that does not mean you're not allowed to put yourself into this song. Yes, it reminds me of Orwell. yes, it is indeed about the different levels of our society and how it trickles down from the wealthy(true owners) the politicians and finally to the people. But there is something more sinister and disturbing at work here. Some of us are gluttons for punishment. Some of us take joy in dishing out punishment. This song has that sadist and masochist vibe. am I the giver or the taker? Highly dualistic of me to think such thoughts, but that is what, for me, is disturbing about this song: we have limited choices or no choice at all in the matter. To damn or to be damned? To live in a world of absolutes. What an awful existence! |

"Love her madly, need her badly, want to be her daddy." Sure, it is the one that got away, but it reminds me of the experiences I had with girls that didn't know what they wanted. But, such experiences may color your eyes a certain way in which you view women. There is a Freudian aspect to this song. "Love her madly, want to be her daddy." as if to say that women are like children. Jim Morrison had a similar sentiment: "You're lost little girl." |

this very activity that I am doing right now, by trying to find the meaning behind the song is exactly what this song is about. It is challenging the human conditions' need to incorporate meaning into things we don't understand. If I had to assign some kind of definitve characteristic in order to give us something to talk and debate about, one underlying characteristic is the notion of the Absurd. It makes sense because Morrison was heavily into Neiztsche and French cinema. Both artforms, particular in their early development, were considered the genre of the absurd.
Considering the frenzied nature of the lyrics, for exampke, "Catacombs, Nurshery bones, winter women throwing stones. Carrying babies to the river" the listerner is seduced into addressing the meaning of such. The idea behind absurdist philosophy is how we attempt to incorporate meaning into our daily lives but ultimately fail. |
