Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics 14 years ago
I think its obvious that this is song is saying "there are no atheists in a foxhole", everything about it suggests it. And I don't think that because I'm some "ignorant christian" I think whoever doesn't realize this is an ignorant person in general. Too stubborn to admit to themselves or anyone else that an intelligent and wonderful artist would actually write a song about God, I mean c'mon? Isn't it obvious, you don't even have to read in between the lines, seriously. And the fact it is about that doesn't even necessarily suggest that god is even real. Its just saying that its very easy to laugh and joke about god, like hes a fairy tale or something, but when we find ourselves in real trouble, and we don't see any way out of it, we become desperate enough to try anything, even cry out to god. And its something that pretty much everyone does, even renowned and in your face atheists, even Bill Maher in his own documentary "Religulous" that is specifically about making fun of god and religous people, admitted to doing so. Its a beautiful moving song, that can apply to almost anyone, we go about our lives beleiving we are the ones controlling our fates, defaming god(and when I say god i don't necessarily mean the Christian god, nor does the song either, god is a universal term for belief in a higher entity) but there comes a point in our lives when suddenly we feel helpless, we are fearful and devestated, and subsequently, even if its for just a brief moment, we cry out hoping that we've been wrong our entire lives, hoping that there really is a higher power controlling our lives, and hoping that whomever he is, he will help us out of the dreadful situation we find ourselves in. And that is what the song is about.

I don't think it's necessarily about a father molesting his daughter, but another person, that person being "Cynda Moore.", I could be wrong, but it just doesn't seem like it's about her father. The song however is about some sort of sexual abuse, and its very obivous through reading the lyrics. The anger that Will Sheff's voice puts forthe, is far to horrifying, to be justified as hostility towards one who simply broke another's heart. Those kind of situations are far too common, and in fact happen to everyone at some point in their lives. But a situation where the girl in the song has been raped or molested is indeed significant enough to justify the outrage of Sheff, and having two friends who have undergone such traumatic experiences in their lives, the song has a definite significance for me, and I believe just as pretty much all of OR songs, it is made with perfection.

Okkervil River – The Next Four Months Lyrics 16 years ago
This song makes me think of the Great Gatsby, the way the music and lyrics are portrayed is so bitter and sad, it reminds me of Gatsby's impossible plight to live the dream he'd always hoped for. The song captures perfectly the feeling of two lovers trying desperately to be together, even thought they know it can't be. The line "And when I know were fucked, I'll half the pile and share my pills with you," shows that the hopless situation that these two are in, no longer even matters. "Because we've felt fully in our bodies, and we've felt totally alive, and were prepared to to float above this dirty bed where we both lay, where we lay lie lie," this line shows that they are beyond the fear of getting caught, that they have forgotten the lives they lived before, and want only to live in their reckless, irresponisble world, free of the depressing ties that once binded them. In a way it is slightly sickening, but at the same time it is beautiful, and horrendously tragic. It captures the feeling we all have, the desire to shirk our responsibilities and live in a realm of total ecstacy. The reference of drugs strengthens my thesis, as it adds to the underlying theme of trying to forget the turmoil of the two's ordinary lives, and attempting to live free of the burden of responsibility. Despit the obvious decadence of the song, i think it is one of the most beautiful, tragic love songs ever made, in the same way that the Great Gatsby is one of the most beuatiful, tragic love stories ever told.
