I may be looking way too far into the song but I don't think it's precisely negative, I think it's more grim acceptance. The guy knows he isn't the greatest "But between the drinks and subtle things The holes in my apologies, you know I'm trying hard to take it back" He tries to be better, he would change if he could but can't bring himself to. While that isn't an excuse, the effort should count for something. He isn't chaining the girl up though. He sees "Sunglasses across the bar" but doesn't get upset. He just lets the girl know, "So if by the time the bar closes And you feel like falling down I'll carry you home tonight" In other words, leave if you want, but you know I'll always be here. We both know I'm not perfect, but I'm constant. He's doing the best he can. I'm also wondering if "The angels never arrived But I can hear the choir" is a way of saying he knows time is limited. Not necessarily in reference to death, just this lifestyle, or time with this girl, and he wants to make the most of it while he can. My opinion, not trying to call any of that fact. |

It's not about suicide dude. Look at the song title "Unknown Soldier", now think about he lyrics from the point of view of a soldier in war. "Violent, Let's begin" followed by "the enemies on the way". Some songs don't have a deeper meaning but are meant to be taken at face value. He wants life to be simplified so he can die in piece without having a troubled mind. This would also support your theory that he has lost someone very close. Probably his friends have died right in front of him. His problem appears to be that he does not anticipate living through the conflict as he says "You'll be fine, I'll be left behind." And dying only hurts just once but use a little critical thinking and my assumption is that his reference to broken bones means his greatest fear is being blown up by an IED. But I can't support that. Also, I am an infantry marine so I am not just pulling this out of my ass I do know a little about what I'm saying. |
