This song is without a doubt about the novel "Blindness" by José Saramago and the movie by the same name. It's about a world in which everyone goes blind except for one woman. Considering that the novel has a lot of social commentary and Metric seems to incorporate this into a lot of their songs, I'm pretty sure this is the most accurate interpretation. Near the end of the novel, a group of people she has been helping stand in the rain together...hence "All the survivors singing in the rain" Also, the line "What it is and where it stops nobody knows/you gave me a life I never chose" refers to the fact that no one knows why blindness has overtaken the world, when it will stop, or why this particular woman is the only one who hasnt gone blind. They don't know if it's a disease or what kind of cure they could offer, etc etc |
