For me the song digested on two levels..yes as richeys note as it were...but as a girl who grew up in church I recognize the religious themes. In his songs especially in the last part where he states...I'd like to go to sleep (death) and wake up happy (heaven). The first time I heard the song it almost had a call and response rhythmn ( call and response is the system of worship in which the speaker engages the coingregation verbally to respond to the exhortations being made by the speaker...usually affirmation aka "can I get a witness?") The verse is the call and the chorus is the response. The chord and tempo changes. And good night good bless etc ending w "I'll try my best. But the last verse but I'm really tired...brings you to the speaker affirming I'm really tired,I'd love to go to sleep and wake up happy. That's just my opinion but no matter how you parse it....beautiful song and yeah james is the way better singer...but as written and then edited no way it works without nicky... |
