Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle Lyrics 15 years ago
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That's exactly what I was trying to express. When someone is depressed, it's those little things, those "pickles" that seem to brighten the world just a little bit. This song can't be about sex, it just ruins the innocence of it.

And I also really like the bathroom illustration. I always knew that I liked that line, but I never knew why until now. I've always been tempted to use that line in everyday speech.... "I'm going to use the bathroom.... The truest room and the whole damn house!"

Regina Spektor – Ne Me Quitte Pas Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my happy song! I can be so depressed or unhappy and I'll just listen to this song and I'm immediately "waltzing madly with a broomstick" (to quote the ever wise Regina).

Ne me quitte paaaaaaaas!

I'm sorry, but I can't ruin this song by thinking it represents sex. I mean, this song is so *innocent* and simple. She is unhappy, she goes to the store and randomly becomes happy because she's eating pickles. Really, that's the way *I* am. I'll be unhappy but I'll just randomly become happy over a silly thing, like a flower or a cloud or a pretty sunset. I just can't let the simple happiness of this song be ruined by thinking it's about sex.

Regina Spektor – Buildings Lyrics 16 years ago
Here is what I think:

This woman is, obviously, a drunk. Her husband is very loving "And in the car he would lean her head gently against the side door window/And in the bathroom he would hold her hair back" suggests that he is a loving and supportive husband. He really wants to help her.
The metaphor "They build buildings so tall these days" makes me feel like there is hope for her. People achieve so much in this day and age. Her husband and even her conscience remind her that since people can "build buildings so tall" they can also help her overcome her alcoholism. There is help for her if she just looks for it.
So, her husband is forgiving and loving. "But she would always always wake up the next morning/He'd take one look at her a say "Oh, oh it's okay" All her husband wants is for her to get help. And she is constantly reminded of that "They build buildings so tall these days" again, reminds her that so much could be achieved if she only tried! It reminds her that something can be done for her problem. In a way this second time going over the "build buildings" part, makes me feel like she knows if she doesn't do something, she will lose this loving husband.
But she procrastinates: "She'd ask for time/she would beg for time" She begs her husband to give her time to get over this herself. She isn't willing to go find help. "And he would give her time" Again, he is a loving husband. He loves her enough to give her a little more time. Again, and again.
So she drinks "Coffee, and coffee, and coffee...." to get over her hangover. "Rot at the core" I think means that she feels like crap, knowing what she is doing to this man she doesn't deserve. So she tries to make it better by cleaning the bathroom. She wants to feel like she deserves this extra time. "And it would be almost as if nothing happen" She tries to make it up to her husband. Make him proud. And his love for her, again, would give her time.

"But time is not taken and time is not given it just sifts through it's sift" Technically, he can't "give" her time, because time is continuous cycle. It will always continue, there is no stopping or going back.

So, time continues to pass.

I think the last bit of the song, where she sings every few words from the song, means that the time just passes again. The exact same thing happen again. She got drunk, he wants her to get help, she begs for more time, he gives her more time, just for her to go out and get drunk again. I think this shows what a continuous cycle it is.

My two cents worth, anyway. :D
