well, "my friend is gone, he ran away" could be interpreted as a metaphor for death. that line always reminded me of a close friend who killed himself and parts of this song express how i was feeling after that happened (and still do), so i do not think that interpretation is totally ridiculous. although in reality, i do not think sufjan is the sort of writer anyone can accurately interpret because his lyrics seem very intricately crafted and very personal. i think many of his songs will never be fully understood by anyone but him. in fact, i think it's because they are so personal that they have such potent emotional impact. so anyways, it might not be the most direct interpretation, but i can certainly understand why others feel it is related to someone's death. there definitely seems to be loss expressed in the song, whether through death or simple absence. |

i believe it's "past 12" and not "astwell". it's "burning fiery BRIGHT" not "fright" but maybe that was just a typo. and also, it's "wilder, wilder, wilder, wilder" instead of "while the" in the last verse. great song from a great album. roky is one of a kind. |
