The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is much more beautiful when you take it at face value:

"Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been,"

ER is really, really poor. She picks up the rice so she will have something to eat.

"Lives in a dream."

She's crazy.

"Waits at the window, wearing a face she keeps in a jar by the door,
Who is it for?"

"Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon that no-one will hear,
No-one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when theres nobody there,
What does he care?"

It's Eleanor's funeral. Since she was homeless and had no family and friends, no one was going to assist to the ceremony, so no one was going to hear the sermon or see the Father's socks. The father does care. It's The Beatles asking why.

"Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name.
Nobody came."

She probably died while she was looking for some food by the church. Nobody came precisely because she had nobody.

"Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave.
No-one was saved."

Father McKenzie probably buried ER alone and by himself, since she had nothing and couldn't afford anything other than a charity burial.

"All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people, where do they all belong?"

People come from families. We are supposed to have families and people who are related to us. So how come so many people live and die alone, having no one?
