I know this song is really about the "troubles" in ireland, but it's always made me think more of domestic violence and how it affects families.
The violence caused silence: No one in the family talks about it, probably not even amongst themselves.
The narrator makes up, or is possibly actually telling someone "it's not (happening to ) me, it's not (happening in) my family, while in the narrator's head the family is a war zone of verbal and physical destruction with "bombs and guns", and the juxtaposition between what the narrator tells others and possible him or her self leaves the narrator feeling like a zombie. |

while this song is obviously about a chess tournament, there could be a deeper meaning.
any person who is obsessed with a goal and won't be distracted may see the sex, drugs, love, etc. he'she will be so focused on that goal that the rest of life is missed. |

to me, this song is really about what is important. my much loved father who "took me home" so many times is now dead, but even without him i can still "go home" to some degree. my mother and i don't get on, but i can still go to the old home place for a day or two and just absorb the "feeling" that is there. |

this is a very personal interpretation:
i met a guy and fell in love........after dating for awhile he told me he was gay. yes, that hurt me and messed up my world.
but by then i had met his family and i understood why he felt the need to appear to be straight. they were so.....just ug........they would never accept that he was gay. they were the most homophobic people i ever met.
for him it was a huge, huge hill, mountain, whatever to climb. with my defiant and confident personality for me it would have been "no problem" to stand up to a condemning family.
i hate that he felt he had to lie to me and present us as having a hetero relationship with his family, but had i been in his place i would have climbed that hill and accepted the fact that they would disown me. |

i've listened to this song off and on for so long, and it means so many different things to me.
right now, i can relate to the unemployment aspect. i am an educated person......have 2 college degrees and half way through a master's, but there are just so many people after every job that it just doesn't matter. |

i would never have thought of it in the "grapes of wrath" context had you not mentioned it.
while this song has a more personal meaning for me, i think you have a valid point and i thank you for sharing it. |

i can only interpret this song in a very personal manner. after a very bad childhood i feel extraordinary because i survived and my life now depends on MY day to day life (the morning sun) instead of what happened to me in the past.
for me it is a song of great hope.
i have very much enjoyed reading the other opinions, and can especially see how one could relate this song to drugs, even if it does not seem that way to me. |

i connect it to my own situation (n the past) because i was courted and fell in love with a young man, who after 6 months told me that he was gay. he was trying to "change" to fit in better and i was a convenient target.
his confession did not change how i felt for him.......but every time i "saw him falling" (dating another man) i fell on my knees and prayed that we could go back to where we were yesterday (before he told me he was gay) |

to me it is a ballad about believing in one's self. every one of us is "gold" in our own way, and while everyone gets down, we are indestructible as long as we believe ourselves to be. |
