As some have already mentioned above, Solid Jackson was a band outta Omaha. Simon Joyner played a key role in getting them started since their 1st recording sessions were on his Sing Eunuchs! label. Fortunately I was able to see Solid Jackson perform a handful of times in Omaha back in '95. Yes, I'm from Omaha, so I knew all the key players in the scene. Of course I know Conor and remember watching him when he was fronted the band Commander Venus. The Omaha scene was really something special in that era and this was before Bright Eyes stamped it into national consciousness, but I digress. Unfortunately Solid Jackson broke up after a short time together due to the bass player Blake Smola's suicide. Out of respect for Blake they decided it was best to end Solid Jackson and splintered off into different bands within the Omaha scene. They put out 2 full length LPs and the stuff is golden, even to this day. Lo-fi angst at its finest. If you ever come across any Solid Jackson vinyl anywhere, I'd recommend the purchase. Not only are they very rare to come by, but the music itself will give you an idea what influenced a young pre-Commander Venus Conor Oberst. |
