| Metallica – Holier Than Thou Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song is Metallica's reply to Dave Mustaine. Any thrash fan who knows the story between these guys can figure that out. Why don't you worry 'bout yourself instead? You lie so much you believe yourself. Burn your bridges, build them back with wealth. All of it fits perfectly with Mustaine. Would have to be the most arrogant, judgemental arsehole in the world. Wicked guitarist though! ;) |

| Megadeth – Ashes In Your Mouth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
One of my top 5 Deth songs. Ultimately I think the song is a general anti-war song. The sweet taste of vindication will turn to ashes in your mouth. I think it is describing about history repeating itself with the endless wars that we wage and ultimately we never learn from our mistakes. Hence "Welcome to Tomorrow!" Awesome song and also solos and one of the best drum outtro's ever!! |

| Megadeth – Looking Down the Cross Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I agree, it sounds very much like the crucifixion of Christ but I think it is actually continuing the story of Vic Rattlehead. Vic apparently fell foul of a bunch of black magic occultists and this very much fits the theme of the lyrics. Also the mention of Choronzon would also seem to suggest occultist rather than the Romans. If you think about a lot of the art from the 'killing' era, Vic was depicted as a skull hanging from a cross made from his own bones (the heads of the dead are the banner). His mouth was also stapled shut so he could speak no evil. To me it is Rattlehead, not Christ. |

| Megadeth – Tornado Of Souls Lyrics | 15 years ago |

My favourite Deth song ever (3 of the top 5 come from this album). The guitar solo is metal heaven. YBF is right, the song was inspired by the breakup from his toxic girlfriend Diana. I remember initially thinking it was about pushing the button and detonating the nukes, keeping in line with the theme of the album but it is definitely about relationships. |

| Megadeth – Poison Was The Cure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it is obviously about his heroin addiction. The warm embrace would be the feeling the first time he got high. Poison was the cure I think is referring to dope being the cure for getting well when he was dopesick. It was the only thing that made him feel better but he knew it was poisoning him all along. Also highlights the destructive effect of dope on his career. |

| Megadeth – Lucretia Lyrics | 15 years ago |
One of the coolest tracks off RIP (and there was a load of them). Normally I love to just get lost in the sheer shredfest of the song but when I actually look at the lyrics and try and get what Dave is saying I get this. Mustaine dabbled in the occult in his teenage years (the influence of one of his older sisters and inspiration for The Conjuring) and the story goes that he twice put a hex on people. After 'opening this gate' to the occult world however he often felt that he had invited his demons in and that they remained with him for the next 30 years or so. I feel that the song describes his dabbling in black magic and also maybe his guilt at the harm he may have caused, hence referring to Lucretia waiting for him. Lucretia is a figure in Roman history who it is said was raped by her husbands relative against her will and so strong was her sense of honour that she committed suicide. this makes me feel that Dave is saying that the ghost of Lucretia is waiting for him to make amends for his actions of harming people through black magic. i know Dave has given other meanings such as a psychic that he visited but this is the spin I like to put on the song anyway. |

| Iced Earth – Hollow Man Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song is based on the poem "The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot which describes how the survivors of war are 'hollow' and lifeless and wandering the earth looking for peace. When you look at it in that context it actually does fit the album. Another interesting fact is that Eliot was actually a big fan of another piece of work which was a big inspiration for Schaeffer and that is the poem Inferno by Dante. Just goes to show you should never judge the intelligence of an artist by the lack of intelligence of most of their fans. Amidst all of the headbanging and snarling the guys in iced earth are actually quite deep thinkers it would seem. |
