This is probably about taking pharmaceutical drugs for a bipolar disorder or sometihng of the like Even when he is in a good mood he has to keep using the drugs and he feels like they are making him into something he's not, or dumbing him down, making him dull... one of those, or maybe all of them. Analysis aside, love this song for the lyrics and the melody, however unconventional it is. Probably my favorite by of Montreal. |

To me, this song is about true love. "I'm looking for the tower of learning I'm looking for the copious prize I saw it in your eyes what I'm looking for" He wants to know what true love is, and he wants the greatest prize of all, which to him is love. And obviously he found someone who he truly loves and now wants whoever it is. "All the sights of Paris Pale inside your iris Tip the Eiffel Tower with one glance Stained glass cathedrals with one glint" - He is saying that all of the beauty of paris looks dull (pale) to this person. "You smashed it with your eyes What I'm looking for One blink and then my heart wasn't there no more" - This I'm not sure of. Though I think he is saying that this person then broke his heart, referencing how the person tipped the eiffel tower with one glance and then doing the same to his heart. |

Hmmm... I could be wrong, and I haven't read many of the posts (so bear with me if I'm repeating others), but I think this song is about him taking in a girl to live with him. 'Come on and move in with me And I said, "I'll find a better place Where we can spend eternity"' Also, he talks about how her parents didn't want this to happen, so the mother called him a kidnapper(?), and the father said that he says who his daughter lives with. And Elliott Smith convinced her that he loved her more than her parents do. 'Her mother called me a thief And her dad Called himself "commander and chief" I fought him off with my love' Then she was afraid that she would be killed for leaving her parents. 'She had a dream Woke up in shock She had seen Her own body outlined in chalk' And all the while, elliott is telling her to stay with him, because he knew she felt lonely But I knew the sense of worthlessness She'd have to raise above Don't go down Don't go down Stay with me, baby, stay Sorry for the really long comment, lol. |
