I think all the above commenters are right on the money. It's great song with two layers of meaning - the boys as chewing gum metaphor, and then the obvious sexual references: "You've always got a new bubble to blow" "Spit it out when all the flavor has gone." Chewing gum vs. chocolate = spit v. swallow? |

"Meat and Potatoes" is a double-entente, of course. "She wanted more than 'meat and potatoes'." His rejoinder: "the 'arrow' of our love is straight and true."
In that sense, the ending isn't weird or somber at all. |
