Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is a big Fuck You to the music business, in-bred music genres and their narrow-minded devotees, groupthink, fashion, etc., etc. Famous musicians can influence the world, but the system easily co-opts them. Cobain was tired of being sucked into the machinery and playing the game. This song screams out in a way that nothing has since then, and nothing had on commercial radio or TV in a long time. What's being put out now (including all the 'indie' stuff) is all so hollow and randomn in comparison. Please point to something that screams out the truth! It's all big business now. Everyone's proud to be a part of money/power/emptiness-producing corporate economy and just accepts it all as if it were God-given and inevitable. But they're just reinforcing a human-made system of domination over nature and people that's hurtling towards a bleak future. What a fucking denial.

Neil Young – Rockin' in the Free World Lyrics 14 years ago
Of course this song is a criticism of American nationalism/jingoism and of the hypocrisy of "free market solutions" advocates, etc.. But it's also a rallying cry for real freedom and for the role that rock music can play in making a better and freer world.

Glen Phillips – The Next Day Lyrics 14 years ago
It sounds like the story of Jefferson's democracy and the promise of life liberty and happiness turning into numb consumerism. We'd like to wake up and shake ourselves out of it, but it's way easier to stick another potato chip in your mouth than it is to try to recreate society. But, despite ourselves, it's likely we'll change. Underneath our society, there's still the priceless natural world.
