Monsters of Folk – Dear God (Sincerly M.O.F.) Lyrics 16 years ago
XTC's lyrics are somewhat more pointed and complex, true. And it's a great song. But I think that this is a comparison of apples and oranges. Same title ... very different musical approaches.

That is an interesting point. The melody and arrangement of "My Sweet Lord" are so cheerful and upbeat, I had forgotten that the theme is about struggling with faith, not about celebrating it. "I really want to see you, but it takes so long." Personally, I can relate to a song that is an honest expression of doubt, because it is so human to feel that way. I hate feeling doubtful, but I try to remember that it will pass.

PS - Conor & the Mystic Valley Band are pretty amazing. They were the opening act for Wilco this past summer; saw them in Wilmington, DE. Best night of music, ever.

I simply don't believe that the devil (Satan) has the power to keep God away from anyone, or to trap anyone so that they're not able to reach God. The way I interpret the line is that a person who is struggling with faith, along with fear, anger, or other difficult human emotions, might perceive that God is locked out from their life, or that they are locked in, and unable to reach God. This is no more than a perception. But my understanding is that God does not push His agenda onto anyone. A person needs to say "yes" to God in order to realize that the barriers truly are self-created. I am struggling with those barriers right now. Every day. I can ask God to dismantle them, but if I start right in building them up again, it becomes a total exercise in futility.
