Tool – Sober Lyrics 16 years ago
I was in high school, when my English teacher assigned us all a project, where you had to type out the lyrics to a song you liked and describe what it meant to you. Well, the entire basis for this website, frankly. I remember sitting there, listening to everyone else's. Most of them were awful, considering where I grew up. A lot of country songs, which you don't exactly need to interpret, and songs by Whitney Houston, Nirvana, and Bon Jovi. My turn came to read the lyrics to Sober, which required some censoring. What a grand day it was, when I was able to basically make 90% of that class uncomfortable with the "Jesus blow your *** whistle" line. Awesome memory.

RA – Sky Lyrics 16 years ago
Once again, following my belief that the best songs are the ones that you can interpret in your own way, I toss a couple of pennies in the pot.

When I first heard RA's Only One album, I absolutely loved the different style they brought to the table. Then I heard Sky. A that time, I was really struggling with my own personal identity, and where I should fall into the fold of society. The simple message that I took was that "I can't believe in things that are unseen, unlikely, or unproven; so I'll believe in something that I know is there. I'll look to the sun."

I KNOW THE SUN IS THERE FOR ME. I can see it and I can feel it. Everyone else can see it's there also. There's no denying it, and no need to fight over it. It brings life and it keeps me warm. Why should I ever have to look elsewhere?

Five Finger Death Punch – Salvation Lyrics 16 years ago
I've seen 5FDP twice now, and this song is absolutely an anthem against organized religion, and not any specific one. It just so happens that Christianity is the largest in America. During the last show, a fan - and I don't know what the "your mythological burning fire pit" they were thinking - tossed a crucifix up on stage. Ghost laughed about it, and even acted like it burned him when he reached for it. Sound like a religious guy to you?

The "faithful" have been pushing their beliefs on others for thousands of years, including committing GENOCIDE. Why do people have such an issue with a band of five guys writing songs that counteract those beliefs?

It is funny to see the "righteous" become unhinged so easily, as we noticed by 'Judas' above. The same guy that probably cries out against homosexuality, even though the most influential man in the history of metal, Rob Halford, is gay. "But he's a rockstar, so that's different." Is it really?

Hurt – Abuse of SID Lyrics 16 years ago
The acronym SID is important to the meaning of the song. I, like imdaman1991, once thought it may be a reference to Sudden Infant Death, but we were both swayed.

What I believe it does stand for is Sensory Integration Disorder/Dysfunction, or the inability to interpret or process the information coming in from the five senses. I'm just trying to figure out who he's pointing at. From the perspective of the child in the song, he/she may have SID because he/she cannot recognize the pain of being hit as a bad touch, thus is constantly striving for acceptance by the father. The father in the song may be stricken with SID as evident by his inability to control his emotions.

As I was typing this, I started to juggle another concept that is far distant from above. The child has a form of autism, which would include a severe form of SID known as Sensory Defensiveness. SD means the simplest loving touch may be processed by the child's brain as a full fledged punch. If you read the lyrics as 'you' being the mother, she is using the diagnoses as a justification for his closed off and sometimes awful behavior toward her. Think for a few minutes about the Dustin Hoffman character in Rain Man. There are a couple of lines that may not follow this interpretation, but this could explain the "if you knew what this song was about you would tar and feather me" comment. He's criticizing the mentally challenged child, which is not exactly a social norm.

Del Amitri – Some Other Sucker's Parade Lyrics 16 years ago
I really love what Justin is saying here. The self-proclaimed righteous really don't know what the hell they're talking about. And I really don't care anyway. I'll just trying to drink my sorrows away, sin or not. It's just that simple.

And I've had those days. Getting shnockered to lose the blues may not have been the best idea, but it worked well at the time.

Del Amitri – Driving With The Brakes On Lyrics 16 years ago
I was fortunate to be able to see Del Amitri perform in a little bar in Georgia in 1995. It was a great show, and they were very nice guys. I've been a huge fan of Justin's songwriting ever since, and this song may be his greatest effort. I was disappointed to find that they had gone their separate ways, although Justin's solo album is also outstanding.

Corey Taylor – Bother Lyrics 16 years ago
First off, everyone should always keep in mind, while browsing this site, that the greatest song writers are those that allow the you to interpret their songs in a way that is personal to you. It's like looking at an abstract painting. You see flowers, I see waves.

When I first heard this song, years ago, I had a difficult time interpreting what Corey was singing about. But then I saw the video - face to face with his conscience? I believe the song is being sung from the perspective of his conscience (Never had a voice to protest), and the fact that he constantly ignores it - even when the answer seems obvious but the ignorance wears the man down to nothing.

I've also heard that the song was about Corey's father, but cannot confirm.

Red Goodbye – Shakespeare Lied Lyrics 16 years ago
First off, this song is absolutely outstanding in capturing the emotion that grips most people for the days or weeks immediately following a break up. I think the song meaning is fairly self-explanatory, in that aspect. The problem I'm having is actually determining the quote, and lie, from Shakespeare that was the basis for the song.

'Cause now that I've loved
And now that I've lost
What I feel inside says that Shakespeare lied
Because it wasn't worth this cost

Is it possible that Horn & Ruimy were confused and were actually talking about Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam:27, where he wrote the line:

'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all
