almost as if to say the attraction to this person and the fact that she can't help herself is a great thing, since her instincts would drive her away and she would wind up alone and missing him. very powerful, very beautiful

that's almost exactly what I gathered out of it too. she has a way about her to sort of mock those who have mistreated her, i.e. "king of anything" and "love song". this is definitely more of an inner struggle, "but you're onto me". aside from that, I think musically she expresses this too, how she sings "the one thing I still know is that you're keeping me down" is so uplifting and almost pleasing for her to say. |

| Jack's Mannequin – MFEO: Part 1: Made for Each Other/Part 2: You Can Breathe Lyrics

I really think you're onto something there, it seems to me that this is a classic literary sort of piece. the two parts are VERY unalike one another, but the dynamic is incredible. the first part, I think you're right, is a very innocent and literal translation of what we do with our old friends...we do stupid shit and just go have fun. but the second part, the second part is very mature and experienced. it's very much a slower pace and a much calmer personality. this person is standing in the pouring rain in what's described as "a mess" and though could have called for a ride, chose instead to stand in the rain and absorb the world around. " you said, 'the rain's the rain, some air'd be good for you' ".
the dynamic is that of a "Blakian" (as my literary professor a few years back would say) stand of innocence vs experience. read William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience", this is very much a modern interpretation of an old classic =) |

I really think it's about his battle with Leukemia. he went through countless painful procedures and all in all it was a very turbulent and trying time, but he remained positive and hopeful even in the darkest of days. it's about finding something within yourself to help you overcome hardships. even when the waves are crashing down on you and you're choking on salt water, when there's no end to the sea and the horizon only opens up more ocean, you've got to swim |

this is one of my all time favorite songs. to me, it speaks about two people during a turbulent time in their relationship. it could be after a break up, the beginning uncertain stages or even just a rough patch when one doesn't know what the other is thinking of. right now it strikes a chord with me, I made the mistake of falling for someone that doesn't feel the same way, it was doomed from the start and now that it's more or less over, the whole situation just gets me down. I recall all of the high points and all of the lows, and now every time I talk to her I find the conversation is nothing more than awkward moments after having given my heart to her and having it pushed back to me. I want nothing more than for things to take off between us, but I have no way of knowing what it is she really wants, I just know it's not me. "tidal waves, they rip right through me. tears from eyes worn, cold and sad. pick me up now, I need you so bad" |

that's a really ignorant thing to say. a band isn't immediately Christian because the members are and they incorporate some religious aspects into their lyrics. the members of the band themselves are the only ones that can put that label on there, not people who judge them as quickly as you just did, and that comes down to whether or not they choose to represent Christianity through their music. the band itself is a different entity from that of the members, and collectively they have to agree on the meaning thereof. |

I like the ideas about being in a relationship in which two people struggle against all odds to make things work. Perhaps it is a matter of all circumstances stacking against them but the feelings between the two make all of that disappear when they are together. However, I also think this could represent an inner struggle. From a literary standpoint, the external often reflects the internal so I get the feeling that maybe he's dealing with facing these problems or obstacles within himself as well. |

I think it's a matter of finding something in life to hold onto. not necessarily optimistic or pessimistic, but somewhat hopeful. I think it's about all of us having our vices and ways of coping with our problems. we find hope and light in pain and suffering, taking our past and applying it to our future rather than suffering from it |

not necessarily, he probably doesn't have problems when it comes to drugs but I think this song is representative of giving into desires. I think it's about giving into what we're hopelessly drawn to, whether it be good or bad. I know I've been in the position where I threw caution to the wind and dove into something I knew I shouldn't, but there are some things, some people and some times that you just can't help yourself with. that's what I get out of it |

the long goodbye is referring to a slowly dying relationship. it's going to end sooner or later but it's going to end, "no matter how hard we try, you're gonna make me cry", things are probably beyond repair but neither of them are willing to let go. that's what it says to me |

Does anyone else think this might be an old romantic theme at play here? the chase and pursuit of a life long gone? "I'd like to make myself believe that planet earth turns slowly". I think there's a darker meaning here than embracing childhood. It seems to me that the theme here is the longing for what cannot be re-lived, innocence. Anyone familiar with William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience" would know that the whole idea with romanticism is the longing for what was, what is no more. that beauty that is so prevalent in the life of an innocent being. making one's self believe that time is not an obstacle (earth turning slowly, time is not constantly beating down on us) is an attempt to return to what we as beings with experience cannot attain. "sadder and wiser", with knowledge of experience comes the end of innocence.
