Fine, fine. I'll try. Big fan of Bob Dylan... And I'm a lyricist. This is my interpretation based on the ways I relate to the song. Addiction, meaningless trysts, lack of direction in life... All the while, everyone around (and society in general) seems hell-bent on keeping everything (and everyone) tucked away in their labeled boxes... A few lines that stick out to me... "The empress attracts you but oppression distracts you And it makes you feel violent and strange." Which seems to make a play on addiction... How... even though you crave whatever it is, you are bound to it... Kinda like a fight between the urge to rebel against that which controls you and the need you have for what it is that's supplied to you. "Judges will haunt you, the country priestess will want you Her worst is better than best. I've seen all these decoys through a set of deep turquoise eyes And I feel so depressed." Can't trust anyone... People say they have good intentions and want to help, but... it's fake, somehow. He's jaded. "Your conscience betrayed you when some tyrant waylaid you Where the lion lies down with the lamb. I'd have paid off the traitor and killed him much later But that's just the way that I am." Street politics vs. morality. "Anger and jealousy's all that he sells us, He's content when you're under his thumb. Madmen oppose him, but your kindness throws him To survive it you play deaf and dumb." Another play on street politics... Kindness is never appreciated or tolerated. It's taken for weakness. The only way people with a conscience can survive is to be someone of little importance. Be such a small fish that it wouldn't matter what you think. "Warlords of sorrow and queens of tomorrow Will offer their heads for a prayer. You can't find no salvation, you have no expectations Anytime, anyplace, anywhere." Lack of trust or faith in people. He's paranoid. "Bullets can harm you and death can disarm you But no, you will not be deceived. Stripped of all virtue as you crawl through the dirt, You can give but you cannot receive." Acceptance of the fact that everyone he knows is out to use him... that he cannot trust anyone, and that his situation and people in general, are, indeed hopeless. There... probably wayyyy off, but that's my interpretation of what the song means. |
