I think people may be missing the obvious: I think this song is about a teenage couple, they are trying to get her back before curfew, they sink in the window, but her father is waiting up in the dark. The boy swears he hears his name, either b/c she is calling for help, or the Dad knew who she was with, and does not like the guy, and/or he is just an abusive father....I think the father starts beating the girl- black and blue,but that is nothing new, b/c her father prob. beats her all the time, b/c he struck you but "no where new". The thunder and lightning are prob metaphors for the beatings, b/c she gets beat when she gets home. The boy is either watching this feeling helpless, and has to leave for good b/c either he is afraid (the coward remark above fits with this)their relationship is the reason she is getting beat, or he is afraid the dad will find him and beat the shit out of him. The last line could be I'm leaving for the beatings you get and for my life, or I am leaving for your punches (he feels guilty)or b4 he is punching out my lights. This song is so beautiful and haunting, and so sad! |

| I felt like the song was about a woman dying, maybe from Cancer (illness in my bones), b/c the line about leaving you alone with kids, but she wants them to remember her, b/c she says, "Don't let me go"....it is a heartbreaking song. As a mom, if I was dying of cancer, I would want this song played at my funeral....b/c it is so touching and true. You want your memory to live on even when your gone. | |
