As I Lay Dying – The Darkest Nights Lyrics 16 years ago

If that's the way you feel about God, then you misunderstand the relationship of Savior and Sinner.

It's a friendship. Christianity is a friendship with Christ, a friendship with a living savior. It's not just a type of thing that we say "Hai, gimm3 st00fz pl0x?" when we need something, it's a true friendship. Christ walked around with the apostles, correct? He didn't go around commanding people to glorify Him-He came to SERVE others. He came to BEFRIEND those who were lost, to SHOW them HOPE.

God is a FRIEND. There are a couple of different meanings to most sentences-God WANTS to draw us close to His FRIENDSHIP.

To all of those who think this song is about a girl... you have a huge misunderstanding of what God's role in life is. He's a FRIEND.

Don't tell me that when you're sad, you don't want to be "held" (hugged) by a friend... even us guys want to be appreciated. Don't tell me that you don't want someone to look at your situation the same way you do, to be with you in that moment, to be in your eyes... or to have that person's eyes be the prize, the goal toward happiness-a true friendship.

I relate to this song a lot because of what it talks about. I've gone through a lot of this and I still am. Plenty of people go through things like this. God is the only refuge... and it's something I'm still struggling with. Hard.

"For so long I have felt alone"

- If we live without God, we're empty. It's simple. We feel alone-when Job had nearly everything taken away from him, He had God, but he felt empty. He felt as if God wasn't with him, if I remember correctly.

"Content to live with unrest"

- We become satisfied with where we are, and that's why God isn't moving as much in the world. People become happy with their current lives, or they become so sad or angry with their lives that they are afraid to possibly make the situation worse.

"Longing faded into countless nights"

- Crying out over and over seems to always give bad results these days. Without true hope or faith, then it seems that things never get resolved.

"That buried my weary heart"

- In the end, the more we stray away from love and the more we dive into desperation, the more we get heartbroken.

"But You brought an end
to this dead hour
and meaning to a calloused life"

- the "You" is a dead giveaway, but even if the lyrics aren't originally written with a capital Y, the only thing that can truly bring meaning to life is God. I'd rather have God come down and make my life peaceful than be in a relationship (and I really hate being single). The calloused life is a rough life, the life that's been through things so much that everything just turns away from the soft and smooth and peaceful that is associated with God.

"Held in Your arms"

- God is ultimately the FATHER of mankind, the FATHER of humanity. A good DAD wants to hold his CHILD in his arms-it's an expression of love, of unconditional love.

"But too far from my heart"

- ...not sure.

"These thoughts will carry me through
the darkest nights
while Your eyes rest in mine"

- The thoughts of peace, the light at the end of the tunnel, will help us to make it through the darkness. With Christ in our lives, with Christ as our savior, technically, He's living IN us. If we can connect His Spirit to our minds, we have His eyes resting in ours, and we can learn to see things differently.

"I remember the way You looked at me
and the way You drew me close
with one deep sigh
scattering pieces of my restless mind
forgetting all that we have left behind"

- Christ died on the cross for our sins, that's a given. He died for each sin of every person-every single sin. He did it because He wants to be with us in Heaven. From that cross, 2000 years ago, Christ looked at everybody's hearts, everybody's eyes, everybody's minds, souls, lives... He gave the same attention to you as He did to me, to the pastor as He did to the murderer. He looked at us with that one deep sigh from taking on all the sin in the world. He did that so that we could connect with Him. He gave us that line to draw close to Him with... so that we could look back at Him with the same look He gave us-unconditional love. Through that, we can forget all that we cherished, we can lose the restless mind... through that, we can learn to let go of things that will fade and learn to hold on to the ONE who will NEVER fade.

My meaning could be wrong, but how could any of you think that the song is about a girl? Is that really what the world has come to? There's so much lust out there... and even for those of you who don't believe you're lusting after someone, the only true love is God. I'd rather be held by the Father than by a significant other. Yes, I would love a girlfriend. No, I don't need one. God is my father, and I am his child, as all of us are.

My meaning could be wrong, but I can't see how it would be about a girl.

The video finally makes sense to me, as well...
