Coming from my stand point this is what the song means... I've been real depressed lately because I know there is a time to grow up. But when I see all these "grown ups" they look so crushed and defeated by "life" and I realize that they aren't trying to live life... they're trying to live as long as they can and I feel thats the message here. He says himself "It's not the end, that I fear with each breathe. It's life that scares me to death..." And i feel that really summarizes all those people that end up crushed by life. The fact is you reap what you sow... your shots fired come right back down... You have to spend your time alive truly LIVING, not just wasting away hiding in your closet from the light of a REAL life. People rather live a long life gathering as much as they can when they're just going to die without ever really having lived to begin with... building their dreams on sand and watching it slip through their hands... I feel like thats the general message... Live a life worth remembering... not one where you look back and say... "I wish I had taken the chances" |

Love this song. I think the most interesting part is the quiet like the snow line. I take it to mean that since snow is a winter thing, and winter symbolizes the end of life, that he means quiet like the peace of death. Not to be depressing, its actually a bright way to look at death. I do agree that it is likely that he is talking about Christ's selflessness. But for you non-christians, still there are people who sacrifice for you, like your parents, to make your life better. So you could look to that to be the selflessness. |

I just want to start by sayign I am deeply in love with this song in both lyricism and musically. In my opinion it is saying that there will always be pain in life, but as long as you feel that pain you are still alive. You can't give up just because things don't go the way you want them to... Not to say all the failures won't get to you, creating a "corrupted state of mind" in which one single thing could send you over the edge... beautifully written, I expect nothing less from demon hunter. |

I don't think he's saying he's afraid of success, but more the consequences that come in his line of success. I've heard the same, that Alex is a rather introverted individual. Maybe he's saying he fears all the eyes on him because he knows that if, in those eyes, he fucks up it would destroy him. "The Gallows" are a metaphor for the judgmental mess humanity has become. He fears his success for fear of facing "The Gallows" since Atreyu's has garnered a fair amount of attention over the years, and the shadows of his past are pried open and spilled across his fans. Think of just how scary this really is... knowing the worst part of your past is spread around the tongues of fans by the thousands. In the end we all fear the gallows... that haunting thought we won't be good enough for those we love. |

Deeply in love with this song. The message is very clear.. but the way in which the sound of the song carries is so perfectly haunting and creepy, justified by the message he is spreading. by the way... anyone else think of the zerg when they hear this song ^^ |

I agree this could be viewed as Atreyu telling off the ex-fans that now bash them for their change in sound. But I do think it goes much further than just talking to that specific crowd... It isn't a "fuck you" just to the fans, as xxw1ckedxx stated, but instead I think it is aimed at everyone who has doubted him, put him down or otherwise down talked what he wanted out of life. Since they started in 98 and were independent for 2 years til 2000... the 10 years that hes "talked the talk and walked the walk" not meaning acted like he was the shit but did EXACTLY what he needed to do to get where he needed to be. He stayed the course and ATTACKED his dream until he got it. Saying that he literally had NOTHING but his blood, sweat, and tears to keep him going. To me it is a motivational speak to his listeners saying that whatever you do, there will be people against you. fuck them. Stay the course, go for what you want most in life. And while some might not see the worth of what you're doing... there is "value in every breath" |

I'ma take a stab at this one... Sinking, I've fallen in too deep and I regret it. I don't know is all we have left to say. How do we pick ourselves up now, if the clouds bring the rain before we evaporate? I'll never be able to say I love you. He could be saying he's losing hope in who he is becoming. like he is sinking in the regret of what hes become and he can't pick himself up because he's lost sight of who he really is. He is slowly "evaporating" and while he is totally lost in what he is becoming he is afraid he won't be able to tell the people that matter how he feels before who he really is disappears in this new personality. Stay bright little fireflies; make light before my eyes. This could be saying that little flickers of light still exist. light is symbolic of hope. So he could be saying though it is fleeting, he still has hope; a small light. Thinking, without all of my regrets and my contradictions, where did I go? I thought this was the right way. Do I learn to grow up now, or just fade away under this tree of shade? Or will I be able to say I love you? Reflecting back on his life he doesn't know exactly what point it is that he started losing touch with himself. He thought living without fear and regret was the right way to be. But he is realizing that the negative parts of life, the regrets, are a part of him as much as anything else. The "i will not be able to say i love you" changed to "or will i be able to say i love you" which shows that his faith in who he is has strengthened. I'm not sure if the lyrics is tree of shade or tree of shame; i hear the latter and if that is the case he could be saying you should not be ashamed of yourself and fade away. but accept your failures, because they are a part of your life too. And all you do, and all you say washes away, away with the rain. And all you thought would never change, washes away, it'll never be the same. 'Cause all i see is all that takes me away, takes me away. Here he could be saying that he has changed. and everything you thought you would be, said you would be, it all changes as you become who you are. Life can't go backwards, things can not ever be the same. Feeling swept away in the storm of who he is now somewhat scares him. And all you do, and all you say washes away, away with the rain. And all you thought would never change, (how could I let you go?) washes away, it'll never be the same. (how could I have changed?) To me this is the most reminiscent line. Old relations being friendships, girlfriend or whatever... When his life changed he lost a bond that was very important to him. He realizes that it is not the other person, but in fact his own fault; and it causes him pain. "how could i..." has clear regretful connotations. Wish I could love you. And I don't regret the rain. Now that I'm sinking. I would just say goodbye. Knowing things can't be changed all he can do is "sink" in his memory. The rain could be symbolic of tears. He wants to say he is the same person and still feels the same; but knows, painfully, that he has become another person. He just wishes he could have ended things on a better note. I could be totally wrong... but I hope i get the ball rolling. Please let me know what you think. I mean maybe i atleast get some people thinking ^^ |
